Default Black MZ Range Report

I just came back for a long morning at the range. I was shooting my .45 cal Seneca for a couple reasons. One, to sight it in and Two, to try out the Black MZ powder I picked up on Friday. Now I understand that the MZ is similar to FFg in performance and shooting a .45 may have caused the mis-information. But I compared the MZ to Pyrodex P starting out with 65 gr and moving up in 5 gr increments to 80 grs. And using 3 different bullets (.400" 200 gr XTP with Harvester blue EZ load sabot, 225 gr Powerbelts, and 230 gr Maxiballs). All shots were taken at 50 yds with open sights. Because of this, I shot 5 shot groups in case of a flyer. As it came out, the Maxiballs I could see were an immediate flop. They just about fell down the barrel and accuracy was pretty bad. So that left me with the PBs and the XTPs. After a couple groups with each it was getting pretty obvious that the XTPs were outperforming the PBs so I pretty much stuck with them.
Now for the powder. The Black MZ simply could not match up to the Pyrodex P. Not even if you considered the buring rate difference. The best group with the MZ equaled or was slightly bigger than the worst Pyro P group. Now at 50 yds we are talking maybe 2" vs 1". Easy enough to notice.
I am not giving up on the MZ yet. I will try it in one of my .50s and compare it to Pyro RS.
But so far, for the extra $, I can't see an improvement worth the cost difference. Even the so called cleanliness aspect. Although not as bat as the Pyro, I was getting considerable fouling with the MZ. And I was swabbing between shots.

Oh, and I forgot to tell you all. I took Builder's advice and weighed out charges prior to going to the range. I had a bunch of load tubes marked with different charges to within 0.3 gr. I guess it didn't make any difference.

Never seems to with BP. Weighing smokeless makes a difference. A grain or two with BP doesn't matter.

Bronko, measuring didn't help lol? one of Fg's board members shot one of the APP products and got good shot groups by weighing them. maybe this super duper stuff, is just no good, regardless of what you do.when any BP sub powder is uniform, measuring isn't necessary. APP powders never seem to be consistent in size..

Muley, I agree, but I thought I would give this advice the benefit of the doubt. I guess it didn't hurt to weigh it. Just wasted a little time.

It never hurts to experiment.
