Default Average shot distance

I love numbers and statistics, so I decided to do a statistical average of the ranges which I have shot deer with a muzzy. I mean, I always am trying to be set up for the maximum possible distance, and plan accordingly- I enjoy long range shooting. However, the numbers tell a different story.

I started blowing smoke (from a muzzy ) in 2006, and here are the kills each year with the range:

2006 - 110 yards
2007 - 105 yards
2008 - 90 yards
2009 - 40 yards
2010 - 25 yards
- 40 yards
- 90 yards

Total = 500 divided by number of deer (7) =

Average shot distance of 71.4 yards. I got my dad started using a muzzy about 3 years ago, he's taken 3 deer with one and his average shot distance is 27.3 yards. I know he prefers close shots, so I've sighted the Wolf I bought for him to be dead on at 50 yards - I seriously doubt he will shoot much farther than that.

I'd love to hear from everyone else, your average shot distance (I'm counting shots that hit the deer and resulted in a kill, not shooting AT deer and missing).

As a still hunter. All my shots have been under 125 yds. ML or CF. That spans a 60 year period.

Probably why i've never needed a scope until now.

In 20+ years of hunting (and I have no idea how many deer) the longest shot I've made on a deer was 100 yards. 99% of my shots are under 50 yards and the majority of those are around 30 yards.

That being said, this year I aquired a piece of land to hunt that will allow 200 yard shots. So I might get to break a record this year

I've killed about a half dozen with a ML over the last several years and all my shots have been 75yds (the longest) and less. I don't recall exact distances on all of them but I would put most in only 25-50yrds. But I usually hunt in the woods from a stand or blind so my shots are for the most part short range.

My longest shot on a deer was 172 yards. i've had a few longer shots on wild hogs, including one of 226 yards. The vast majority of my shots are <75 yards.

By far most shots for me are under 75 yards. The longest shot for a muzzleloader deer was 167 yards. I have shot several at a 100 +. On my inlaws place there is a 20 acre growed up field that deer love to cross, this gives me the opportunity for some longer shots, also my place in the river bottoms has 2 eight acre fields that allow for longer shots.
