Default Patch Knife

Guys I want to buy a patch knife. But I have no idea what I want. I think it would be nice to have one with a Damascus blade. And from what I understand a Damascus blade is easy to put an edge on.

I am not very good at sharpening. But I need to learn.

Please show me some pictures of what you guys use for a patch knife.

I am open to about anything. So tell me what you like. and please post some pictures.

I am also considering a simple small folder. Which folder do you guys like?? Which folder holds and edge?? And takes an edge fairly easily?? Thanks, Tom.

Funny you mentioned this, I use what I have on me at the time...This afternoon I shot my flinter and used my Bear Stockman for a patch knife, worked fine...I've used my Bear SharpFinger knockoff and a regular pair of scissors as well...

Those guys over at the Traditional Muzzleloading Forum could fix you up a more traditional design I'm sure, but any sharp knife will do...

I carry a simple lock blade folding knife with a stainless steel blade. It holds a good edge and does a fine job cutting patches as well as all the other work around the place I need it for.

Years ago, I built a patch knife out of an old hacksaw blade. I sharpened it on a grinding wheel, and it worked perfect. Then of course I set it down somewhere and never found it again.

I don't use a patch knife, but the basic classic Mora and Eriksson wood handle knives are super duper razor sharp and hold an edge like no others in their price range. But they're polished carbon steel and not stainless which is their only major drawback. That and being too sharp means that if any mistake is made with the edge of the blade, that it will slice through flesh like butter.

I made one out of an old small file for the steel, with an antler tine for a handle. Ground out the handle with a dremel tool inserted the blade and set it with epoxy. Then used brass pins to give it a more traditional look. I have it attached to my possible bag in a hand made sheath.
But for most of my shooting, I either use my pocket knife or a paring knife I bought at the Dollar Store for a buck and keep in my range box. Its really easy to sharpen with one of them "V" tungsten sharpeners.

These knives are similar to mine. don't have a photo, but it hangs around my neck and the knife is about 3.5 to 4" long. some of these knives at a little too long for a patch knife. I will take a photo of mine and post later.
