Default shopping list

Okay, I bit the bullet (prefer to shot them) and ordered a Traditions Percussion Hawken from Cabelas Canada. In addition to I ordered extra nipples, nipple wrench with pick and a ball puller.

I have on supply Goex 2f, a few .490 balls, 85-90 .495 balls, pre-lubed patches, a package of 300gr FPB's and hand full of .430, 240gr xtp's.

On my outing to the big city I'll need to pick-up #11 caps... plus?

I've only had experience with Inline muzzleloaders!

I recommend some Goex 3f and some 320 or 370 grain Thompson center Maxi Balls. The Maxi Balls are deadly on deer and the 3f will reduce your fouling. I use 83 grains in my Thompson Center 1:48 inch twist Hawkins. I have yet to try sabots out of it but that is next on my list. I wouldn't hesitate giving them a try if I were you. (Forget the round balls, lol)

I've really struggled with the round balls in my 1/48 barrels. They're fun and cheap to mess around with but for hunting, go with a maxiball or the like.

I've found the Hornady PA Conicals ( 240 grain ) shoot really well from my Hawken and my Buddies Traditions. I will hunt with these this fall. They are way easier than the PRB's. Just jam them in with about 75 grains of powder and they should pattern well.

The PRB's have a charm and tradition but be prepared to work at load development before you go afield.

Congratulations.. that is a fine rifle. And you should be in good shape with the 2f powder. And it might like the .495 better, depending on the patches.

I am sure I forgot some things. Also I can not stress the value of a good range rod. They are better built then the one that comes with your rifle. They are longer, and can take more abuse. I save the rifle ramrod for hunting and show. Otherwise I get a good range ramrod and do all my loading and cleaning with that.

That rifle of yours has a 1-48 twist but they are good roundball shooters. Place that roundball in the right spot and you will have venison. My Lyman .50 likes 80 grains of Goex 2f. That would be a good place to start for you. Try 80 grains of Goex 2f and a roundball and see how it shoots. Then you can build your load from there.

Also you do not need everything on that list. One powder, one projectile...etc. I am just showing some options.

Thanks for the idea's. The list is great. I'll be able to check off what I need or don't need!

The hardest part is waiting for it to arrive.

Any need for #11 magnum caps, as opposed to the regular?

I don't think so. I just used some for the first time and found them to be a heck of a lot dirtier than regular primers.
