Default Pwoerbelts and Flinter

I decided to take the 50 cal flinter out with the sleeved barrel 1:28 twist and try out the Powerbelts that Chet had sent me. All shots were taken at 50 yds, iron sights and 90 gr of Goex FFFg.
First up were the 295 gr Aerotips. 5 shots into 1.43" C-C.
Next were the 300 gr Platinum. Again 5 shots 1.80" C-C.
Just for kicks I brought along some hand casted 320 Gr REALs. Used a felt Wonder wad and lube was my own concoction of 3 parts Bore Butter and 2 parts Bees Wax for both bullet and wad.
Three shots into 1.20.
During this shooting there was never any sight adjustments and I was using a 6 O'clock hold.
On another target I shot 1 370 gr Maxiball and hit the bull.
I've come to the conclusion that any bullet out of this barrel in the 300 - 400 gr range is going to be spot on at 50 yds.
The humidity however was getting to the old flinter. And I began getting some misfires from the moisture buildup. I had to wipe down the flint on every shot for the last 4 or 5.

Looks pretty good Bronko. I can get REALs to shoot pretty well at 50 yards also. But can't get them to hang together out there at 100. I love the nice round hole they make on paper.

Semi - Where I hunt with the flinter, if I get a shot at 75 yds, that's a long way. Most shots are about 35 -40 yds so I think I am in good shape.
One of the reasons I even shot the REALs today is to check out the lube I mixed up. Adding the beeswax to the bore butter really solidified it just about right. It didn't liquify in the 85* temps as would the straight bore butter.

If all of my shots were in that range I'd be considering using REALs exclusively. They're cheap to cast at home, fun shooting and easy loading. Nothing's going far when you put a 320 grain chunk of lead through the vitals.

You are right. They hit with a solid thump. But so do those 370 gr Maxiballs. I hit a deer square in the shoulder with one of them many years ago. There was about an inch or so of snow on the ground. Where he was standing there was a halo of hair. I think that big slug knocked every loose hair off that buck's body. He ran about 60 yds before piling up.

I wish my .54 would shoot like that. Beautiful Clem. You got me itching to take out the GP rifle and throw some lead down range.

I guess I am more surprised at the Power Belts performance. I had always heard bad stories about them.

Not too bad at all. I've harvested many deer with a 370 grain Maxi Ball and not one of them went far. The one or two that went far enough to get out of sight, left a super easy to follow blood trail. The only problem with them that I have found is that they are hard on your shoulder. I just picked up some 320 grain Maxi Balls this year to ease the pain. I believe they should do just as nice a job.

Most powerbelts do real good at paper targets. All the targets I shot with them were DRT.I personally wouldn't hunt with them though.of course you all know I feel that way or I wouldn't have gave them away.

Chet. I'm glad I won those bullets and thank you for them. I shot a huge doe with 245 gr hollow point Powerbelts a few years ago. She took off on a dead run and went about 80 - 100 yds. That bullet performed havoc on her chest cavity. I try to avoid the shoulder whenever possible. And try to tuck the bullet just behind it about 1/3 of the way up.

That is some real good shooting. I will have to try powerbelts in my Lyman 1-32 twist rifle Great Plains Hunter and see what happens.
