For the scope shooters with bad eyes

The other day on the range I did something I do not normally do. I took my glasses off because of sweat. I mean I am not totally blind. I can see blurs.

Anyway, after I swabbed and loaded I put the rifle in the cradle of the rest and looked through the scope. Now remember the scope is set for my glasses. And just for kicks, I moved the focus to where it would be set for my eyes only. And I shot this way.

I noted the rifle hit in the same spot. But I was also kind of shocked that the group was a little tighter. May it was luck. My question is to the glasses wearing group... do you every shoot with your glasses off and adjust the scope to your eyes?

If you do, can you see better down range? Do you shoot tighter groups? And last.. have you ever done that hunting?

I personally have never done it hunting. But I am going to experiment more with the glasses, no glasses aspect of shooting. I want to see if it makes a difference.

I hate hunting with glasses!!!. I tried the same thing you did and with the quick focus on my Bushnells it is really easy to adjust so that I can see through the scope. Problem is without my glasses my hunting vision in the woods was terrible. Out of focus and I could not pick movement as fast as i wanted. I wonder if being near-sighted would aleveate that problem - I can not see near or far without help. I had to either wear the glasses or what I am doing now wearing throw away contacts.

Them contacts are kind of the way to go. I used them for a while but then had to carry a pair of reading glasses with me and I kept breaking them. Might try them again.

As for hunting without glasses.. a herd of deer could walk past me and I might not see them. I am near sighted and now need bifocals to read with. No fun getting old...

Did you have your glasses own or off when you checked the group?

I have taken my glasses off at the range adjsted the scope and experienced the same thing you did, well I really do not know if my groups improved.

2yrs ago my glasses were fogged up and I took them off in my treestand and they fell to the ground. I could see perfectly out of my scope but if there was a deer 100yds out he would have been safe cause I would have never seen him!!! After about 30 minutes of daylight and not being to see that far I climbed down to find them. I now just wear my contacts most of the time when hunting.

Dave, I never shoot/hunt with my glasses. Now I only need them for reading anyway. The tops are pretty much clear glass.
Now a trick my cousin (a certified NRA shooting instructor) told me when shooting a handgun at targets is to wear your glasses. But look thru the reading portion of the lens. This brings the front sight into clear focus and the target remains blurred. I did shoot better but I had to hold my head at an awkward angle. I may try it again with OTC reading glasses.

On the bench with a scope I always shoot without my glasses and with the scope adjusted for my naked eye. I do believe I shoot targets better that way.

Now when hunting I get all kinds of combinations. If I'm siitting in a box stand or on a climber I usually have a paper back book in hand - and I need my glasses to read. So I adjust the scope for my glasses. But if I start looking around with binoculars I take my glasses off. If I see something I grab the gun and prepare for a possible shot without putting the glasses on (That's one of the reasons I like the Simmons ProDiamond with it's quick focus eyepiece). If I'm still hunting I have to have the glasses on. So the scope is adjusted for shooting with glasses.

I had the same problem... but a wise eye Doc at COSTCO of all places fixed me up... I wear a normally prescribed contact in my right eye for shooting and whatever but then he raised the power of the contact that goes in my left eye one full power. I am suppose to wear a 3.25 power to have great vision, but he prescribed a 4.25 for that eye which allows to to read most things without readers. It does cause a tiny bit of blurreness way out there but not enough that I really notice it. But between the eyes all works out very well. I have no idea how he decided to do what he did but I am grateful... I have and astigmatism(sp) alos which complicates things.

I never wear glasses when using a scope. The focus on the scope seems to do the same thing glasses do.

I shoot on the range with out glasses as I believe that they induce added parallax but I have to wear them hunting. Never tried the the contact lenses as I have dry eye.
