White Bison - Need some help

I picked up this rifle last week just to see why everyone loved the White's so much. I know it's the bottom end gun but wow, this thing is smooth. It's a .540 and I was shooting Hornady GP 425's with 70 grains of RS. Hardly any kick which really surprised me. I believe it has a Wilson Barrel in a 1/28 twist.





I started at 50 yards and with my eyes I need to choose between seeing the target with my glasses or seeing the sights without them. Either way, one of the two will be fuzzy. The top three shots were clear target and fuzzy sights. I have no doubt these would stack up if I scoped it.



The gun came with bases but I'm not sure which rings will fit these. Does anyone know from the picture what rings to buy? I'm thinking about a Simmons Pro Diamond.



Lastly, the stock is wood with an orange peel coating. I really had to hammer the conical's hard to pass the crown and I was a little worried I'd break it at the grip. I read on another site that these can be strengthened by drilling a 3/8" hole and gluing a dowel in for support. Anyone ever seen tips on this job?

Those bases are Weaver style and you need Weaver Style rings to attach to it. I use the Quick Release. And I am not trying to sound like a tight wad (which I am) but I purchased some $16.95 steel quick release rings from Traditions Firearms in medium height. I mounted a Simmons Pro Diamond 4x32mm on my White Bison and like you, have a fine shooting rifle. So far the rings have held up well.

As for drilling out the stock. Mostly I believe that is done on the White Lightening Rifles. Batchief or Underclocked can better advise you in that area. I have never drilled mine, and see no reason to.

As for conical bullet.. White are a slip fit rifle. You want a conical that is around .540 in your case. Contact Bull Shop conicals and see what they have. Another conical that shoots well in my Whites that are inexpensive... are REAL conicals. Put 60 grains under them and they will really shoot well. I believe I have some of the 300 and 380 grain laying around here. I am sure they would shoot well.

After you set that conical on the muzzle.. use that short starter and really give the hard ones a good smack to drive them into the bore.

You have 3 stacked up under an inch with 2 fliers and iron sites. Plus you weren't even using one of the better conicals. No Excuses has the 535gr ready to ship if you cant wait for BullShop to start shipping again. I hear he is busy with other things atm until the end of the summer.

I think you are doing great and awesome for its first time out.

Congrat on the new (used) rifle Jeff. Looks like it will be a good shooter.
And BTW: you should keep your front sight sharp while the rear sight and target appear 'fuzzy'. Once you locate your target, focus on that front sight and let the target be blurred. Look at it this way. The sight is constantly moving but the target isn't going anywhere. At least that is the way an NRA firearms instructor told me to do it.

Nice shooting. That is super with open sights and the first time out. The 535's from No Excuses shoot great for me with 75 grains of Goex 3f.
As for the dowel. Myself I would do it. I consider it like a cheap insurance policy because it would be so hard to get a replacement stock but like Cayugad says you might shoot that gun the way it is for your lifetime with no problems to the stock. You really got a great bargain on that rifle. I think all the .540's had the Wilson barrel with 12 lands and grooves. Congrats!

Thanks for help Fellas.

I knew someone could quickly identify those bases and save me a ton of time trying to figure it out. I really want to see what it can do with a scope as my open sight skills and suspect vision is holding back the gun's potential.

I normally never use see through rings. I rely on the scope.
