Default Question

I recently purchased a new in the box (old stock) 50 cal CVA Kentucky Rifle at an exceptionally good price. In sighting it in I found that I was unable to get good groups no matter what load of powder or size of projectile or patch swabbing between shots. I lapped the barrel and nothing changed. I tried Pyro RS, Triple 7, and real black powder to no avail. Out of desperation I loaded it with 80 grains of Pyro P using a Hot Shot nipple and CCI magnum caps and all of a sudden it became a tack driver with both patched round balls and PA conicals. Has anyone run into this before?

Yes, in most of my guns. At least you found the load. Some guys give up too soon.

A friend of mine shoots a Traditions Kentucky long rifle with a 1-66 twist. He built it from a kit. It was the very first muzzleloader he ever owned. He normally shots 90 grain of Pyrodex RS and a pillow tick moose milk patched ball. His rifle is amazingly accurate. He has fixed sights, and at 100 yards it shoots one + inch to the right or left, I forget. But he refuses to adjust the sight as he is worried it will not be accurate anymore. So he adjusts for that one + inch when he shoots.

I watched him knock a fat doe flat at 102 yards with his open sighted rifle. I mean.. BOOM and plop. It was a high shoulder shot, so when we got up there she was still a little alive (his next shot to the head fixed that) but even he was amazed. He said he aimed a little high because he was worried about the distance. So he aimed high shoulder. I then told him the deer was down hill, so he should have aimed dead on or even a little low. But anyway, that is a great rifle you have. I am sure the accuracy will only get better the more you shoot it. His did.

My friend also found that is shoots Goex 3f really good. But even with all the talking I did, he's convinced that Goex is the dirty devil of the powder world and so he shoots Pyrodex. I should point out.. he hunts with it once a year, shoots his deer, cleans it, then puts it away. He's not a nut like me that needs to shoot all the time.

One of the guys that shoots here gave me a Traditions Timber Ridge 50 that he had tried to get a decent group with for over a year. It took me one session to find that it is very accurate using loose powder rather than pellets. One hundred grains of RS and a 250 grain Slick Load Sabot and you can hold 1½ inch groups at 100 yards all day long. With pellets you would be lucky to hit a 8 inch paper plate at 25 yards twice in a row. I know of at least five people who have given up finding the right load and either sold the gun at a big loss or gave it away. One fool just sold a T/C 54 cal Hawkins for $150.00 because he couldn't find the right load for his gun. Wish the moron would have let me know he was selling it. He replaced it with a T/C Bone Collector that he paid too much for. He is now having trouble working up a load for it. The way he is going I might just be able to pick it up for pennies on the dollar.

Oh man! I would have loved that TC Hawken. Didn't he pay more for that than the Bone Collector?
