Default Lube Disappointment

I concocted a lube using 1 oz bees wax, 100 gr of alox, and 3 1/2 oz of Olive oil. It looked good and it applied good but talk about fouling!
I have never, ever seen such sever fouling. I was shooting it with 90 gr of RS and a 370 gr Maxiball. The grouping was fine so accuracy was not an issue with this lube. But the fouling was so waxy. After each shot, you had to run at least 3 alcohol patches down the bore to get it reasonably clean. I tried shooting twice without swabbing in between and the second ball required considerable persuasion to get it down the bore. Then, even with short stroking I got my rod/patch stuck in the bore and had to hook my T handle between my truck's tailgate and the tailgate cable and pull. it finally came out. (thank goodness I epoxyed the fitting in the T handle.)
Conclusion: Don't use this combo for bullet lube.

It must be the Alox. I've used a mixture of bees wax, Crisco and olive oil and didn't have that problem.

May I have your mixture to give it a try. Mine just got heated back up and poured into the trash can.

I use a mixture of 25% bees wax, 25% Crisco, and 50% olive oil (by either weight or volume - it's not that critical). Put all three components in a glass container (I use a Pyrex measuring cup) and pop it in the microwave until everything turns to liquid. Stir it up a little then pour it into a container of your choice to solidify. I use old bullet boxes and musket cap tins and rub the bullet across the lube before I load. If you want a softer mixture, just add a little more olive oil and put it back in the microwave.

thank you sir. Have to give it a try.
I wonder if a touch of murphy's oil soap would make it clean easier?
your opinion

I was also thinking of using plain old bore butter and adding some bees wax in to stiffen it up some. Any thoughts on that?

Probably wouldn't hurt, and may very well help. I've thought about adding pine oil to the mixture to see what happens (and for the smell), but never got around to trying that.

I think I've seen a post or two on other forums about people doing that. Have never tried it myself. It would probably work.

nchawkeye, I've tried that mixture quite a while ago and didn't find it any better or worse than plain old olive oil. I used olive oil for the last few years and was quite happy with it. Then in the last year, on a whim, I tried Liquid Wrench as a patch lube for balls. WOW, I really liked the results I got. It takes very little on the patch and, besides giving me great accuracy, has other desirable attributes. It saturates the patch almost instantly and is pleasant to handle. I put a stack of fifteen or twenty patches together. Squirt the LW on them, wrap them in a paper towel and squeeze the bundle to take up any excess oil. They are almost dry feeling.

Save the olive oil for the salad.

Use this in your gun.
