I posted this on another forum when a topic came up about wet guns. Thought it might be useful to some of you guys.
Grab yourself a couple of those long skinny plastic bags that are placed at the doorway of some stores for putting wet umbrellas in.
Two of them folded up as small as possible will hardly be noticed in your hunting pouch or back pocket. If heavy weather threatens, put one over your gun from the muzzle end, and another from the butt end. Your gun will stay dry in the heaviest downpour.

Ya` think so, huh? Spend a few hours in a good rain and let a half dozen drops of rain get down the bore and see what happens.

I must have to admit, with the head space adjusted nicely on my CVA's, the primer IS completely waterproof now. Just the bore is a weak spot but i always carry it pointed muzzle down in poor weather.
I've never seen these bags anywhere Semi ,are they handouts or are they for sale? if free I wouldn't mind having at least one in my pack or pocket. If caught in a real downpour I'd definitely rather have whole rifle covered.
I always cover the bore. Even on a CF gun. Plus, I carry muzzle down in any rain or snow.
You think i've never hunted in the rain?
I always cover the bore and carry muzzle down also, but last year I found out that isn't always the answer. I have used the finger of a latex glove for years, so that is what I did. There was about a foot or so of snow on the ground and I was hiking in. carrying muzzle down worked against me as I slipped and when I went down so did the muzzle. Straight into the snow, needless to say the latex glove didn't hold up. the snow went into the barrel and I spent the rest of the morning hiking out to clean, dry and reload my gun. I think what would have helped would have been ice cleats instead of a bore cot and carrying muzzle down, or maybe, just maybe the bags semi is talking about. It make me buy some thick heavy duty bore cots instead of cheap latex glove fingers.
Would a muzzle mitt do about the same thing? In bad weather I put a muzzle mitt on the end of the barrel and it seems to keep things nice and dry. Depending on the rifle, I use either a chunk of old blue tarp I'd cut, and hang that over the breech area (as a cheap cow's knee) or tuck it under my jacket bottom when sitting. So far its worked for me.
Although your method would protect the stocks and just about every thing. Besides when I hunt the rain is white, sticks to every thing, and don't melt real fast. But that is some good advise there.
Something else to tuck in your pocket. Use the tins that your #11 caps come in. Make a small candle out of them. If you're ever stuck over night, you not only have light but its a lot easier to start a fire in them. Just some bees wax and a wick you can by at a craft shot is all it takes. I have them in the glove box of my vehicles, my boat, and my hunting gear. Then a pack of vacuum sealed matches and you are all set for outdoor emergencies.

If its raining or shows signs of raining I have the perfect solution for keeping your rifle and load nice and dry. It's simple really. Just pull up a patio chair by the window of the cabin so's you can see out and if you're careful how you lay your rifle across your lap, it will stay nice and dry.
