Default X7 Glasbed

Last week i went out and shot the target.

The scoped Omega X7 had been shooting pretty good, but started throwing a flyer now and again. I noticed the stock touching the barrel harder on one side, and free floated it. I noticed a lug being a bit loose, and tightened it. More material was removed from the stock. After all these 'fixes' i put on it, it still managed to produce the numbered shots from 100 yard. The Accura made the shots marked blue from 200 yard. This was the last straw, so it was decided to glasbed the Omega.

The Glasbed was put in the 2 lug recess' of the Omega, and all along the barrel channel from the falling block to the end of the stock. Care was taken to keep the glasbed out of the ramrod groove. This morning i was needing to go and shoot the rifle.

The first 4 shots from the clean cold Omega X7, are shown in the bottom target. It seems the glasbed made it more better. The 2 holes in the top target were made by a cold clean Accura. The load was 110g of BH, 300g Deep Curl, short black Harvester sabot, and STS primer. The range was 102 yard.

Because of SEMISANE' LAW, i 'knew' the fifth shot from the Omega would surely go haywire. So, i walked the 100 yard to the target and photographed it, after the 4th shot. Getting back to the truck, i fired the 5th shot with the Omega; perhaps i should have waited longer. It made the high flier, which wasn't a surprise to me, however it still made me sad. That dang SEMISANE' LAW! Then i shot the third shot with the Accura at the top target, which made a nice 3 shot group.

Then i loaded and shot and reloaded and shot and reloaded and shot and reloaded and shot and reloaded and shot the Omega X7. The barrel was quite hot at times, but i was able to leave my hand on the barrel without having to jerk it away. The tenth shot was the low shot. The fifth shot was the high shot.

Then the Accura was taken out to 202 yard, and used to make the very top hole in the top target.

The state is forcing me to hunt the prairie more this coming season, than i would like. The plan is to remove the 4x from the glasbed Omega X7, and install a scope with a CDS dial. Hopefully, now that the glasbedded X7 is shooting some better, the CDS dial will help me harvest some prairie doe. Hunting the prairie on government land has been hard for me. Packing a light weight accurate rifle that can reach out beyond 200 yard, could end up making the prairie hunt some fun.

Looking pretty good Ron. Have you tried 250 grain Deep Curls or XTPs in that X7?

This is only 50 yards, but DAMN.

nice shooting. That X7 always did interest me. There was a store north of me that had one on a shelf. I think because of the price they were asking. But now that they are no longer available, it might be a deal in that store.

No pictures. I was more worried about getting the job done without plugging the ramrod groove, freezing the trigger area, stucking the barrel in the stock, having the recoil lugs permanently married to the stock, and not having enough glasbed put in the right place, than i was doing a tutorial. If i did the glasbed on your rifle, it would be the second. If i do my other X7, i will take time to take pictures. I would be proud to offer advice on doing the glasbed on an Omega, but am not qualified to do the job for anyone but myself.

No. Even though i have left the elk hunting in Montana, i still have a need to load my rifles as though one day i will aim them at an elk. It has been my experience that the 300g Deep Curl, Nosler, and XTP are very very destructive to deer. It seems that many think a 300g bullet is too much for deer, but in my experience they work good. For elk, a 300g bullet would definitely be better. I have shot more than one deer with the 270g Deep Curl, and they are very very very hurtful to deers. I thought i would be able to try the 260g PT on deer, but now i don't think i can.

This old elk hunter has a need to use the heavier bullet. However, the 200g shockwave seems to fly good, and is good in the water jug test. As i write this, the only bullet i can consider less than a 300g is the 200g shockwave/SST. Chances are, i won't give it a try, but i might. Some of us are set in our way; sometime it is better; sometime it isn't.

It is conceivable to me; but for SEMISANE' LAW of the 5th shot, i would've shot a group this morning, worthy of................, but alas,......................

I know that I won't shoot anything less than a 300 grain bullet. Seems with me that any cal I choose I always go with the heavier bullet. Just like my .243 gotta have a 100 grain bullet.

You know guys, I was a confirmed heavy bullet believer also (as stated often in my posts of a few years ago). I used 300 grain Gold Dots almost exclusively in my in-lines (even though the 250's shot a little better sometimes). I have to say those 300's sure do a number on deer.

Then I got that darn .45 caliber Green Mountain LRH barrel for one of the Renegades and ended up shooting two deer with it using .40 caliber 200 grain XTPs. I tell you - them deer WAS DEAD.

So I reassessed my thinking regarding the 250's and even plan to give the .40/180 grain Deep Curls a try next season. Even old farts can can change direction if the wind blows hard enough.

That's not to say I've abandoned the 300's. I have four fresh boxes of 300 DC's sitting in the closet next to me right now.
