Boring, boring and boring to many

Today was sunny out but a real teaser of a day. It was 40 degrees but that wind was out of the north off the lake and it was cold. And the wind gusts were strong at times. Still, I wanted to shoot but not have to worry too much about anything. So I picked my boring rifle. The White M97 Ultra Mag in .504 caliber.

I knew the rifle was sighted in dead on at 75 yards but the target area was clear back to 100 yards. So I placed the target at 100, 101, 103 yards and called it 100 yards. I then adjusted the scope for a little more then an inch in elevation as it would be hitting low. I decided this rifle can be sighted in for 100 yards. What the heck.



I thought you might like the ballistics of the load. I find it interesting that even though I am shooting 80 grains of Triple Seven 2f and a Bull Shop 460 grain NEX .504 conical bullet out of the rifle. Look at the energy that thing carries with that little bit of powder. Who needs 150 grains of powder?

I fired the rifle from a clean barrel. After that I never swabbed the bore of the rifle. I did wipe out the breech once because the caps were not sitting right. I was shooting Winchester Magnum #11 caps.



First shot on a clean bore was a little bit off. But I did not worry. I then shot two more to check it. It was hitting a little high. I guess I gave it to many clicks. So I lowered it just a little and shot a three shot group. Are you bored yet?

Then I aimed at the small deer head in the lower left corner and shot twice. I was aiming dead center on the face. I could not see my hits, even through my spotting scope. This bothered me. Maybe the shadowed were off or something so I aimed right on the top of the deers head and fired. Then I had to hike down there and look, also it gave the rifle time to cool. When I saw where the first two hits were, I was more then pleased.

Returning to the bench, I then aimed at the upper left bull. I fired one shot. Not to bad I thought. So I aimed at the upper right bull and fired one shot. Again, more then pleased with the rifle.

Then I could tell the breech was getting dirty as the bolt was getting hard to pull back. But I aimed at the green square bull. I fired three shots. The third one is the one that is just out of the square.

I decided I could stop for the day and save some bullets and get out of the cold wind. Or field clean the rifle and keep shooting. Since it was so late in the afternoon and I had other things to take care of in the house, I called it a day.

I told you this would be boring.

I was able to recover a little bit of lead that I shot this winter.

I also picked up a bunch of lead out of the snowpile. The bullshops almost looked new but there were some xtps and they really mushroomed out.

Horrible shooting there Dave. I can actually see strips of paper between some of them holes. You better work on another load for that rifle. But if you don't have the time, just send it on over to me. I think I can make room for it somewhere if I have to.

The one thing I will give my White rifle credit for.. you ever have a rifle that you take out and it shoots great? The next time you take it out, it shoots ok, but not quite as good as the time before. Well my Whites just seem to shoot like this every time I hit the range with them. The reason I wanted to shoot at 100 yards was, that question that was posed about... which rifle to use and it was a knight or a white. Well I said the White might be a choice. I figure if it will shoot that kind of group, even three times that size at 200 yards, would not be all that bad.

Also I know of some White rifle owners that shot deer at 200 yards with these huge chunks of lead. And most of them love to tell you... they drop in their tracks. So is a conical that much more superior a projectile? Is the weight causing the knock down power of them? Or what?

By the way, I shot at a soda can off hand... and I can fanatically state... I stink off hand. I don't know how some of you guys can do it. Practice I am sure. But me.. I need to lean on something.

Me too. But in all reality, it's the smart thing. Off hand is for close shots when no other option is available.

Me either. And Dave you are right - practice is the key. Back in the 80's when I was shooting indoor 4 position smallbore, my friend (who started me on it) told me this trick. You are never going to hold your rifle rock steady. The trick is to let the rifle move. With practice it will begin to move in circles. And the more you practice, the smaller this circle becomes. The bullet somehow manages to find the center of this circle - or close to it. And the most important thing - never try to 'snap' the trigger as it passes the bull. You will pull your shot 100% of the time. Squeeze the trigger each time you are on target and stop when you are off, holding that pressure. (Trigger control)

Bronko is right on that, its very difficult to hold steady off hand on a target. When I shoot off hand my crosshairs are below the target. When I raise the gun up slowly and they meet the target is when I squeeze the trigger. That style has always worked for me, but there is lots of different ways to do it. Good shooting there Dave. I sure wish they still made White mls.
