Talking Breech Plugs and Carbon?!?!

Well I finally got the time to set down and give my Knight Vision's bp a good cleaning. I got out the drill and started to ream out the plug. Boy was I surprised at how much carbon was in that plug. The hole had gotten to only a small opening. It took me a while to do a good job, but when I was done I had the plug completely opened back up. she will be ready for the range.

I have never seen anything like this before. No wonder I was having a issues with unusual firing problems. I can't wait to shoot it now.

Even after you clean it out with the bit, soaking it in Widex/vinegar followed by a pipe cleaner will remove even more lol.bet it lights right off now.. have fun... Ray

Scrub that baby out with the ProShot steel gas port brush set. It will shine up in under a minute. They work really well on a break action at the range too since you don't need to remove the breach plug for a quick cleaning.

I'm thinking about getting a Vision but I'm a little worried about the plastic jacket thing for the primers. Is there anything you can tell me about them that might put me at ease?
And I'm looking forward to your range report if you give one.

If I were to get a Vision I would buy the NFPJ plug. It would be $25.00 well spent and you would not have to worry about buying the red jackets.

The FPJ (Full Plastic Jacket) is a very good apparatus for a lot of people. It has been used for years in different Knight rifles and is a proven reliablr tool. It was designed to insure that the breech of the rifle remained water proof in the worst of conditions. It allowder Knight to be one of the first ML's that you could actually throw in the river and come back the next day fish it out and shoot it. It also allieviated the handling of small metal caps or primers and at that time it was a welcomed addition. The one down side of the FPJ is that is not as clean in the breech area as the newer designed NFPJ's.

Some people did use the NFPJ (Non Full Plastic Jacket) as an alternative but handling the primer with the hand or even with a capper might not be as easy as the FPJ. Older NFPJ breech plugs were no cleaner in the breech are than the FPJ, actually I felt they allowed more blow back in the breech area. And to be sure the breech area was not water proof.

In the case of the Vision, Gordy Edwards designed a newer style NFPJ breech plug that virtually eliminated the blow back in the breech area. If you choose to get a Vison there are types of NFPJ breech plugs available make sure you get the newer non-magnetic breech plug.

None of the NFPJ's will provide a water proof breech area to the point that you could throw it in the river for a length of thime and expect it to fire. The biggest reason for that are the primers, they come in many different lengths and diameters, in a NFPJ water can get by them and into the powder in the worst case senario.

With all of that said, and in most cases, I still prefer the NFPJ once you master the handling of the bare 209 primer, especially in cold wet weather. Advantage with a break open Knight... a capper will work great, not so true with a bolt style Knight...

When I bought my vision it came with the new plug installed. I don't use the red holders. If I am not mistaken, you can't use the BH209 powder because of blowback. I may be wrong so don't quote me.

But if you are looking for a Vision, check and make sure it has the new bp. However if you can get a good deal on the Vision with the old system bp, I would get it and then buy the new bp and install it. We are only talking about $25 bucks.

Thanks for the help. I think I'll pull the trigger on the deal pretty soon. The only problem is trying to make any sense out of buying a new muzzleloader when I have three new ones that I haven't even broken in our found the perfect loads for yet. Four if you count the Bobcat I de-rusted.
