I retrieved this from just under the skin on the opposite side of the entry hole of a young 8 point after hitting it broad side using 90 grains ffg Goex black powder fired from a Thompson Center Hawkins at about 10 yards at ground level..
I should have given something for a size comparison.
I am really surprised that you did not get a pass through. Good expansion though. I bet the deer did not go far.

Well that had to leave a mark! From my experience, that should have hit bone to flatten that much.

How many grains does that piece of lead weigh. I have never seen one flat like that. Usually they keep a round nose and have jagged edges all around. That one looks weird. Tom.

I don't have any way to weigh the ball. The deer went maybe 20 yards. No blood trail of course. It was over 20 years ago this happened, sorry it took so long to post it. But I think it broke a rib, I know it was a double lung shot behind the shoulder.
At that range with no pass through and no blood trail, I never shot at another deer with a round ball. I have always worried if the shot wasn't perfect I would loose the deer without a blood trail. From that point on I started using 370 grain Maxi Balls and have always had a pass through with an amazing blood trail.

I shot one into a tree that looked just like that. I think he hit a bone.

That ball is the only one I ever recovered. All the others have been pass through. The first deer was 80-90 yards out. The Renegade was loaded with 90 grains (as I remember) of Pyrodex RS. It went through that first deer hitting a high shoulder shot and dropping it in its tracks. Then it hit the second deer and broke and passed through the spine (dropping that one also in its tracks.) and lodged under the skin along the spine. That was the kind of expansion I got out of a home cast pure lead .530 ball made off a LEE mold.
