Default Spent Bullet

These bullet, and thing, i picked up on the hill side behind where i normally place target. Apparently snow is enough of a cushion to inhibit deformation of bullet. All the bullet in the first picture are 300g Deep Curl. The far left bullet in the second picture is a 270g Deep Curl. The middle 3 are 200g SST, and the 2 on the right are 300g 45 caliber XTP. The snow was pretty much gone, when i shot the XTP. It seems some of these bullet could be shot again.

Ron, i have had the same experiance, when I return to some of the spots that I shot in when there was a decent snow depth to catch the bullets.... and I have re-shot some of the reclaimed bullets.

Glad you posted that Ron. I was thinking about going with the deep curl bullets. But not now. I'd rather have a bullet expand and even separate then not to expand at all or very little.

I guessed i missed something here, Gold dot/ deep curls expansion is excellent where it counts.. on a live animal and not in deep fluffy snow.. Ray

Glad you posted that Ron. I was thinking about going with the deep curl bullets. But now i know i like them. I'd rather have a bullet expand in my game than fail if it hits some snow first.

One way to really see what a bullet does is to shoot at a frozen milk jug filled with water. Not only does the XTPs expand, but it blows the jug apart. I figure if a bullet can do that then a deer/elk has no chance.

bronko22000

Very few bullets are going to expand in deeper snow. Snow is mostly air, there is nothing to cause the bullet to open.

I have recovered XTP's and Noslers that look the same way. It is all about the density of the medium the bullet is shot in to. Water is even more dense than snow.

Now is the snow is packed and or packed and frozen you will a completely different effect on the bullet. But shooting it into deep snow will not cause much of a reaction at all. The bullet just keeps going until it runs out of energy.

It seems you missed this Deep Curl thread which show one of them 300g deep curl bullet, smucking 3 one gallon jugs of water at 200 yard. Watching the video makes me cringe to think what it would be like, to be a deer, or anything, including elk, hit with one of them bullet.

Just wanted to add: the horse bucked when the bullet hit; them unexpanded bullet were found on the hillside behind the horse 10' to 40' away.

I guess I did miss the snow only thing. But I would imagine it would take some pretty deep snow to stop a bullet out of a muzzy. Usually my backstop is a bit more solid than fluffy snow.
