Default FTX's and SST's

If I understand correctly, the FTX is the new SST? How come nobody here really shoots the FTX? I haven't been over on Doug's for awhile, but it seemed like everyone there was using the FTX and had great results. Has anybody here tried them much or are they just not that great?

The Hornady FTX bullets come in rifle and pistol calibers: They did not replace the SST bullets.

It still looks to me like they should shoot pretty well. Why doesn't anyone shoot them?

I tried them in a testing mode... Accurate - Holy Cow! they are accurate... but running them through the torture test they showed me the same thing that other Hornady's did - on occasion - and most times they may not but sometimes they can come apart, especially if they contact a large bone at closer ranges. Other reports indicate they can pencil at close range through a skin skinned animal like a whitetail. I have no experiance hunting with the FTX series.

Ive only had 2 FTX/SSTs i have a lot of confidence in holding together at ML speeds. The 40cal 200gr and the 458 325gr. Both are much tougher than the others ive tried. The 45cal 300gr SST ML bullet isnt too bad but i prefer the Harvester. Its cheaper and held up just as good.

One you might want to try if you dont mind a .429 is the 265gr made for 444 Malrin. Ive seen several very favorable reviews on it.

As Sabotloader said, they all seem pretty accurate but if i had to use one in a 50cal it would be the 458-325gr. It hits like a freight train and holds up to SML speeds (2300fps) but still performs well at sub speeds too.

They are all good enough, for deer and boar any way. To be honest about it I prefer certain ones, like the 50/40 for long distance and the 325 gr for very big animals but for target and deer boar and black bear the 250 gr FTX was designed for the Bushmaster cartridge rifle at 2200fps and does a good job and is very accurate. I also like the new Lehigh brass bullets I can push them real hard and they are still very accurate and I like to push my long range target and hunting loads.

I stay away from any bullet that does what the ones in the above test did. for the money they want for the SST/FTX. just do you self a favor and purchase some Barnes bullets... Ray

This hog did not complain when the 250 grain SST (Shockwave) hit him. Yep, there was no blood trail. Didn't need a blood trail, watched him fall over about 100 yards from where he was hit.
