Default Maxi ball size

Do the maxi ball engrave the rifleing on the base or the top ring? I have some that drop in all the way to the top ring and stop and it just seems strange to me. I haven't shot maxi ball in many years; I always shoot PRB. I shoot a 54 cal Renegade that the bore measures 540-550 land & groove the best that I can tell without a cast.
Thanks

My guns will leave a mark on both lands of the bullet. I have had some that start a little easier than others, but the always leave marks on both lands. I had some that I was worried about a while back so I pushed them through my inlines to test them.

They engrave the top ring when loading and upset to engrave the bottom ring when fired.

That is what I thought but wasn't sure with how easily they dropped down too the top ring. I bought 120 Mountainman Muzzleloaders Maxi's for $20 to try.
Thanks
