Default loading cast round balls

this comes from reading some on another forum.

last few times I shot rb, I loaded with the spur down. have had good accuracy for that.

on the other forum, some say it does not matter. some say spur up.

how do you load cast rb?

I load them spur up. Only because the old fellow that taught me muzzle loaders, and how to cast, told me to do it spur up. I've been doing it that way for so long, I am too old to change.

I tumble mine and make the sprue go away.

For those I don't tumble, it's sprue up.

Done an experiment on that about 25 years a go. There were several people in the club involved in it we tried them both ways and came to the conclusion that what makes a difference is that they are reasonably centered not that they are up or down.

should know you would go to all that

a guy suggested to put the round balls in an cast iron pan and let them ride around in your car for a week or two.

Do you use a tumbler or a vibrator?? What kind of media do you use??

I also load with the sprue up. But I never considered tumbling them. I will give it a try. Tom.

HEAD0001, I use my home made ball tumbler. See it here: http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/blac...l-tumbler.html

I gotta tell you...I started shooting flintlocks in the late 70s...I've tried loading them every which way, even with the sprue sideways...

Dang if I can shoot good enough with iron sights to see any difference...

I usually load sprue up though...
