Back in the rock pit...

I decided yesterday that I needed to go shooting again and I really wanted to shoot one of the DISC Elite 45's. I grabbed old #71 and decided I would use it. Actually I wanted to make #71 feel needed again... I almost sold it twice in the last couple of months, but the last time out it was very close to being gone but i got cold feet and pulled out. It really is a great shooting rifle and I wanted to prove it again in the rock pit.

Turkey season is a coming, but right after that is farmer squirrel season, thought it would be fun to use one of the 45's just for drill.

I also wanted to shoot the Speer Gold Dot/Deep Curl again as they are really inexpensive to shoot. Today I verified in my mind that they are an awesome totally accurate bullet. Even with the deep hollow point and the concave base, they shoot extremely well. There is no doubt in my mind that they would also make an excellent whitetail bullet. The way my gun is set up I can shoot them to 178 yards holding on the main cross hair of the BDC reticule.

It was another one of those no target to show you trips, even forgot to grab the Chronograph. So you just get a batch of pictures to look at.

I placed a bunch of birds on the basalt wall at the back of the pit and a couple on the snow on the way to the back wall. These would serve as my breakable targets.

The load was the normal 110 grains of T7-2f, ignited with a Win T7 primer. I did try to shoot some really old Knight 40/45 borwn sabots - but they were the old polymere formula and were not very easy to load. It was cold in the pit and the old formulation of polymere is not very pliable especially in cold temps. I also was shooting the newer HPH polymere 40/45 MMP sabots, they loaded great. All of that and both sabots seemed to shoot equally well.

Before leaving ths morning I was reading MD's post about his concern over the depth of the hollow point in the new PB's. The 180 grain Speer also has a very deep HP in it, but I am confident it would perform as built. Unfortunately when you shoot them in Basalt - you really do not get to recover much of a bullet.

But I am really interested so the next trip with the 45 I will try a recovery effort with the speer through some jell and into a bullet catch... I am really curious at this point.

Some darn good shooting!the GD/DC do have a big hollow point,but they are jacketed and along with the dot control expansion.something pure lead won't do... looked cold also lol !! Ray

Well, at least you got to do some shooting Sabotloader, even though you failed miserably in the target posting department.

You already know how I feel about Deep Curls, so I won't pile on that other than to say in the future I'll not likely be buying any other .452 bullets than Deep Curls.

You might think about playing around with a light load and 125 grain .357 bullets in developing a squirrel load for the .45. Remember my experiment with them? (http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/blac...-squirrel.html)

I'm heading out this evening for the last weekend of deer season. I have two does in the freezer but still haven't connected with a buck and our club buck harvest is half of normal. All of the ones we were getting on game cameras in September seem to have disappeared. So if a mature doe shows herself this weekend she's gonna be in trouble. If nothing else, I want to get in a range session with the .45 Renegade and 180 grain Gold Dots. Might even break out the chronograph.

I too really like how the deep curls shoot.
