Talking New Scope Mounted

I recently mounted a Leatherwood Malcolm scope on my Hawkins Carbine and it looks great. However, I am having one hell of a time trying to zero it in a the range.

I started with some 370 gr. R.E.A.L conicals and it ws shooting low, real low. With everything zeroed on the rear rings the bullets were hitting about 4' low from POA to POI. Well I started to make my adjustments and got it to about 11" from POA to POI. Now I have about no more adjustments left. Never had this happen to me on any scope. Never had this much adjustments to try to get it zeroed in.

I am sure the techs at Leatherwood will tell me I need to use shims, but I still think this is kind of unusual to be this far off???

I have to say that I did find one problem I over looked on installation. The forward ring was a little springy like the after ring. I thought this weird, but when I got the gun home and took the scope from the gun, I found another screw at the base of the ring. When I tightened it the spring action went away. I will be taking the gun back to the range and see if I screwed up.

Has anyone else mounted this type of scope on a caplock before and if so how did it go for you?

Oh yeah, I must admit that the scope worked just fine otherwise and the groups were very nice.

never tried that scope. I always throw a Simmons Pro Diamond 4x32mm or Simmons Pro Sport 4x32mm on my side locks. Since I don't intend to shoot more then 100 yards with them, they do just fine.

Good luck with your scope.

Thumbs up

Hey Dave, I thought I would try to be a little period correct with it. They do look good. But they are very nice scopes, clear and lots of eye relief.

This Hawkens is one of my favorites and my sight isn't getting any younger. I also have a full size Malcom that will go on my H&R 1871. It is an old Tasco brass model and it will look great on the rifle. I am shooting BP cartridge rounds in it now. It is in .38-55 cal.

Those tube scopes do look cool. The ones that Green Mountain Barrel were selling.. I was so tempted to buy that rifle. Took a lot of talking to make me not. What power is it?

Talking

I bought the 17" which is a 3x scope. They have an 18" in 6x and then of course there is the full length version.

Not sure what power that last one comes in, but it may be 6x. I see that Cabalas is selling them now.

Look closely at your mounts see if the front and the back can be switched, if they can try switching them sometimes it makes the difference.
