Worst luck with new muzzy's

I must have the worst luck with new guns! 5 shots from my new Traditions and the nipple threads pullled out and the nipple went flying and burnt the hell out of my forehead!

To bad too, the gun really shot well. The first four shots only left 2 1/2 holes in the target( i was only shooting 30 yards). I have never had a new gun shoot that well right out of the box! Sportsmans Warehouse ordered me another one, should be here the end of next week.

As far as the over all performance of the gun, I couldn't be happier with it. The first 2 shots were a little hard to get the conical started in the bore, but the next 3 were a piece of cake. The main trigger and set trigger worked great. Main trigger is a nice easy pull, but when you use the set trigger the pull is VERY light, makes the gun very accurate. I was having a bit of trouble finding a cleaning sequance, but heck with only five shots through it, it will take more time to get that figured out.

The load I was using was 70g RS 368g T/C Maxi-ball RWS 1075 primer.

You don't have bad luck... you have a guardian angle watching over you. Your lucky that nipple did not fly out and hit you in the eye or something. There is no excuse for that kind of thing to happen in a new rifle.

Some people make the mistake of the wrong nipple. There are different size thread for certain nipples. T/C and Knight are one size, Lyman and Cabela's are another size, and CVA and Traditions threads are still another size.

Although if this was a factory nipple, there is no excuse for this to happen. I would be on the phone screaming at who ever made that rifle.

I personally know of one case where a person got a good gash/cut on the side of their head from that exact same thing.

Yeah, I would be pretty PO'd at that too. Especially since you were shooting a fairly moderate load.

I'll tell ya I'm REALLY glad I was shooting a left handed gun, if I were right up on the hammer like I am shooting a right hander it may have been a different out come. The nipple, and the blow back lifted my hat off my head.

The nipple was the original one in the gun, and I had not removed it to clean it or anything yet. I had checked it for proper tightness. it seemed to be correct. after the shot there was very little left of the threads in the breech. I wish I could have found the nipple though.

And as far as being on the phone, I would have but, Sportsmans Warehouse was johnny on the spot and ordered me a new gun that day.

Another good reason persons should wear good quailty shooting/safety glasses when shooting.

I think I would stop and think for a minute before getting another gun of the same model. This kind of malfunction is inexcusable.

As far as eye protection "Thats a big ten-four good buddy" I now wear glasses full time, I was really glad for the poly carbonite lenses.

I'm not to worried about having another gun of the same make. I will take the nipple out of the next one before I shoot it and check the threads with a tap and die to make sure of proper fittment. Hell I'll take it out at Sportsmans to make sure it's all right before I take the gun home.

My Dad and I were talking about the events that lead up to it. When we fired a few caps of to dry out the barrel, we were getting alot of flash out the front of the hammer/nipple like the were not quit lined up right. I didn't find this out of the ordinary though, each time I put a new nipple on my T/C I have to file the nipple just a bit to insure a tight fit between the hammer and nipple. I used a fingernail file and made a few passes on the nipple and it seemed to take care of the issue. We were thinking that the nipple may have been cross threaded from the factory and that is what may have caused it to come apart.
