Default Refinishing a CVA Hawkens

I am going to refinish my 54 cal CVA Hawkens. Several years ago, I was refinishing a couple of items and decided to refinish my hawkens and my Marlin 22 rifle . I was young and didn't really care about the gun or color. I did a bad job on sanding and finishing.

Now I want to refinish it and a CVA Kentucky Pistol that a some one gave me, and do a much better job so I can hang it on the wall. I want both to look authentic. The barrel is blued and some minor scratches on the Hawkens, and badly browned on the pistol. I am thinking I may need to replace some of the screws with black heads since they are holding some of brass on and don't look right to me, or are they suppost to be black?

I need advise from you guys that have experience with these Hawkens and refinishing.

both my cva hawkens both have black screws.

I like using an citrus based stripper. when sanding, using fine grit, 300 or smaller. I do a little shaping around the grip and cheek rest if it has one. polishing the brass with brasso.

i think on my 54 I am going to blacking the brass should look good with the light color finish that is on it

What would be a good dark color? What would I put on it after the stain to protect it? I am guessing I use stain.
