Default 45 maxi ball question

I was just wondering if anyone has ever loaded a 45 maxiball bullet into a sabot and shot them in there 50 cal. A while back I ordered some 50 cal sabot from MMP, the black ones. it said you could load them with .451-.452 bullets. just wondering if the 45 maxi ball would fly accurate out of my 50 cal Green Mountain LRH barrel. Thanks, Steve

I personally never tried it. I would questions what the sabot has to hold on to the sides of the maxi with. But you never know if it will work. I would take some careful measurements before loading. And if I did not have any of the .45 caliber maxiball then I would forget the whole idea and get something else to shoot.

Hey Cayugard, have you ever shot 45 or 50 maxi ball out of your GM LRH barrels, I have one 45 and 0ne 50 cal LRH barrel I would like to cast my own bullets for these barrels, do you have any suggestions with sabots or without. Years ago I shot maxi balls in my 54 cal TC hawken rifle ( 1 in 48 twist barrel ) but wasn't real impressed with there accuracy. I do like making my own bullets, just wondering what conical bullet would shoot the best out of the 1 in 28 twist barrels.

Never tried Maxiballs/sabots, but I've always had good accuracy with Maxiballs and 1/48 twist. I'm surprised your Hawken didn't shoot them well, but all guns are different.

My Genesis is a 1/28 twist and it shoots Hornady FPBs well. Have not tried any other conicals in it yet.

Try some no excuse conicals in that rifle..they are extremely accurate in the .45 cal rifles.you might also try some bull shop conicals.which sabot loader and others speak highly of.as far as a sabot load the gold dot .250 or 300.

I have tried hornidy great plains in 45cal out of an knight usak. they loaded tight, they shot horrible. they just did not fit in the sabot. the base of the conical may be larger then .452.
