Help with Renegade

Hi All. I recently bought an old renegade (serial #6xxx) and I find that it shoots very well but approx 10" high at 50 yards. My load is 85 grains 2f, .015 patch, and 530 ball. The back sight is all the way down. Is there something else I could try or should I just order a new higher front sight? Thanx. Dennis

Wow!! normally the T/C sights.. while I personally do not like them, are pretty good as far as being set. I have all my Renegades set half and half on the back sight and they hit dead on at 50 yards.

I hate to recommend a new sight. I would clean the guts of the old back sight, first. There is a spring in there. Still ... because it is shooting high, with the sight all the way back, there is no where else to go.

Check the screws in the rear sight and make sure they are good and tight inside, under the cover of the rear sight. Be careful when you open that, there is a spring in there that likes to disappear faster then a plate of brownies at a weight watchers meeting.

I hate to throw a curve ball but if the sights are correct for he gun you have 2 options.
#1 taller front sight
# 2 return in to t/c and they will fix the problem with the the barrel . just drop a note stated the problem
I had a new englander in 54 cal. same problem high at 50 yards about 8" so I returned to them and they fixed the problem no charge and gave me a new set of sight at no charge

Check everything like Cayugad said if you don't clear up the problem Then try a load of 110 gr as recoil may be lifting the barrel before the ball is out of it. If it is shooting a good group I would not mess with the barrel. If its not shooting a good group then check the button on the end of the barrel for nicks or gouges.

I agree with cayugad. You should check the elevation screw is the correct length, so it allows the sight to be lowered all the way. If the previous owner lost the original and replaced it with a longer screw the sight won't go all the way down.

Also rust and dirt can prevent the full movement of the elevation screw. The T/C Hawken and the Renegade use the same sights.

I guess that at least part of my problem is that my sight is not exactly as shown in thom2's picture. The bottom of the sight extends back to the rear where the two red lines are. It may be a replacement sight but it does look very similar to the picture. I suppose that I could send it back to tc but living in Canada could cause me a few problems shipping it back and forth across the border. I think I may try a larger powder charge and failing that a higher front sight from track of the wolf. I spend a fair bit of time reading this forum and knew this would be a good place to ask for help. Perhaps I should make more of an effort to contribute. Thanks for your help. Dennis

Where did you buy your Renegade? I'm thinking I need a another muzzleloader. Kind of leaning toward a 54 cal.

Hi Johnnyo. I bought it on the Canadian gunnutz site. Lots of smoke poles on it but quite a few of them are overpriced. It really helps if you know what the gun you are looking for is worth. Good deals do come up. Dennis

I am jumping in here really late... but I will throw out an idea... Since you say your rear site is not like the one shown in the picture - it may be possible that some one has changed the rear site and did not match it up to the front blade sight.

Your rear sight is the same basic contruction as the one in the picture correct...

Is it something like this one?

If the sight is not bound up with crud, or if the adjustment screw is not too long, the EASIEST fix is to get a taller front sight. Try to talk to the folks you get it from, as they can usually determine the correct height if you tell them how high it is shooting at a given range.

The suggestion for increasing the powder charge is a good one, and it may get you to where you can hunt with it as is. Also, a 6 o'clock hold may help. Good luck.
