Default Pitted Bore

I bought a remington genesis last year that has some pitting
in the barrel, they are not very deep and are the worset by
the breech plug. I have switched to blackhorn powder and
want to make sure that i get all the old powder out of the pitts
I have tried rubbing compound, scotch bright pads, and have
spent hours trying to get the barrel clean but my patches
still come out grey!

QUESTIONS

1. Will to much cleaning with a scotch bright pad hurt my barrel ?
2. Should i try jb bore shine , if so which one ?
3. Is there some kind of coating that i can put i the barrel?

I have be lurking here for a year and have learned alot about
muzzle loaders from you guys thank you! This is still a great
shooting gun and i have hung up my shot gun and will never
go back to it, but i would like my patches to come out white
not grey when im done cleaning the gun.

A good strong solvent like Butch's Bore Shine should work for you. I'd quit with the scotch brite for now. Get it clean, use alcohol patches to remove all solvents and dry the bore. Once it is dry finish with a very light oil patch. Remove oils prior to shooting with acohol and dry patches. Make sure breech plug is free of oils too.

I have a Genesis and I'm interested to hear of your experieinces with BH 209. I'll probably be going to that powder once I run out of Pyrodex.

Blackhorn 209 shoots excellent out of the Genesis. No breech fouling, excellent power, and easy to clean.

Sometimes it seems that gray will just not go away. JB Bore Paste is a good cleaner. That gray you see might be from all the cleaners and such also. Have you tried a water bath?

Get some of the JB Bore Paste, put that on the scotch brite. That will not remove metal. And then start working the bore with the Scotch Brite and the Bore paste. After that you really need to solvent patch clean that barrel real good. And then get a good coat of oil in it.

Also as you shoot it, that gray will go away. I have a badly pitted rifle that was given to me and while it drives me crazy, I still get a gray patch out of it. But it is a good shooter.

Wrap a patch with JB on it around a brush-scrub away.Get the JB out with Butches Bore Shine also using the brush/patch combo.Might take a while but that's to be expected with a pitted bore.

I have an omega that you can run patch after patch through the bore and there is always some gray that comes out. There are no pits in it and it is well polished. I think some guns that's just the way it is. I would make sure it is clean by using the JB bore paste and then oil it.

Sometimes no matter how good you clean your barrel, even if it's spotless clean and shinny you'll get Grey Patches, I think it has to do with a Chemical Reaction to the Barrel and whatever Solvent or Oil you use.
Pitting is'nt what anyone wants, most times it'll never go away as the damage has been done. BUT....if it shoots good that's all that matters, dont worry about it, keep er as clean as you can get it as that's all you can do. If she does her job that's all that matters. Dont beat yourself up over something you cant undo, if it really bothers you and you cant fix the problem get a new Barrel, if it shoots good use it.
There's more imortant things in life to worry about than a $100 Barrel. Remember when you buy used that the person you bought er from usually is'nt gonna take care of her as good as you would. When you buy a Balck Powder Mler the Barrel is the first thing you should inspect, if it's spotless and shinny clean than you know the person was a True Black Powder Hunter, if it's not than he was just a wanna be end of the season hunter who just had a few Tags to Fill and could care less about how to take care of his Mler.
