Default Got a problem

It has been several years since I shot my rem 700ml, so I gave it a good cleaning and took it out to shoot. The problem I had was the hammer wasn't striking the caps. I took the bolt apart cleaned it again, no rust everything looked fine. The hammer was striking with plenty of force, just wasn't making contact with the caps. Mine still uses the number 11 caps, I know the caps are fine because I shot the same ones out of my white. The bolt is screwed in properly and aligned right. Any ideas? I running out of things to look for now.

It's gotta be in that bolt area, can't adjust the breach plug out to meet the firing pin...

Have you removed the firing pin spring and manually pushed the pin through the hole to make sure the pin isn't dinged up or the hole has a burr on it?? If not that, it could be crud built up inside the bolt itself...

If it was a Knight, I'd tell you to unscrew the plunger safety...

Being it is a slam fire there is no firing pin to push out a little hole as nchawkeye wants.

If I remember correctly Remington did have a problem with some of the ML plunger springs and the problem may well be a weak spring in your bolt. You can take the firing pin/plunger apart. You can either replace the spring or stretch it out till a new one arrives.

Have you dryfired at all? If you re**** will the cap go off on the second try? Try replacing the nipple. My 700 was fussy about getting the cap fully seated on the nipple.the weak spring is probably the cause.but getting the cap fully seated will most likely solve your problem.

I have seem some of the plunger guns that for some reason hate a brand of cap. The first strike will set the cap and the second strike will fire it. See if that happens. If it does, change caps. Normally a CCI Magnum will seat on any nipple and fire the first time. My RWS are a little more fussy. Or the spring is weak. I really don't know your rifle's internal guts.

Sounds like a short or battered down nipple.

The striker is not contacting the cap. It's not a seating issue. That can be avoided by seating the cap properly to begin with. Most guys just put the cap on with finger pressure, and it ends up about half-way on. With the gun pointed in a safe direction, lower the hammer or striker onto the cap and push on it to fully seat the cap.

Back to your issue. There is likely dirt, crud, or a burr somewhere. 5 years of inactivity can cause that. If everything is truly clean and in good shape, it could be a weak spring. If you can't replace it, in the meantime can you use a longer nipple, like a hot-shot? They are longer than the standard T/C nipple, not sure on your 700.
