Default GMB LRH .45 cal

Today I wanted to try a load that Semisane had mentioned (I believe it was). This would be a 200 grain Hornady XTP .40 caliber hollow point. But this time I shot it out of a .45 caliber rifle.

Rifle: T/C Renegade stock with Green Mountain Barrel Long Range Hunter 1-28 stainless steel barrel
Scope: Simmons Pro Diamond 1x32mm tradition QR rings
Powder: Graf's & Sons 3f Black Powder 85 grains
Sabot: Light Blue MMP sabot
Projectile: Hornady 10mm 200 grain XTP
Distance : 70 or 71 yards according to the range finder
Weather: 69 degrees sunny blue sky

I knew the rifle was sighted in for 50 yards. And when the first shot hit, I was kind of surprised it was so high, but on a clean unfouled barrel I let that slide. Then I just started shooting. I wanted to shoot a total of ten shots. Unless #1 is a double hole, I just can not find the tenth shot. Also I was spotting the hits through the scope and only walked up to check it every three shots. So some might be a little out of sequence, but I think they are close.

I am only guessing ... but if I had the time and moved back to 100 yards the hits might be at the bottom of the red. Does that sound about right? Next time out will tell. Company came over so I had to stop shooting.

85 grains of 3f black powder might not seem like much to some of you shooters, but believe me, it sure seemed to ring the steel trap when them little stingers hit. I am sure that would be a lethal deer load.

I know it would kill a deer, and that's a good group as is, but I think more powder may tighten it yet. Left as it, I'd imagine you'd be another 1" low on average at 100.

Nice Dave. That's real close to the load I am shooting. I shoot 80 gr of Pyro P with that bullet and sabot combo. I get good accuracy with that load also.

That's pretty good. I concur that more powder might tighten the groups up a bit. When I'm using the blue sabot with the 200 XTP I get the best accuracy above 90 grains T7.

Here's a rather crude trajectory study I did with my .45 GM LRH, 85 grains GOEX FFFg, 200 grain .40 XTP's, and H4540 blue sabots.

It was only one shot each at 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150 & 175 yards. But it does give you a pretty good idea of what you can expect.

That is good to know. It would make sense that they would drop about that much. So our 70 yard hits are about the same. And I did copy your charge to see where they would hit out of this barrel.
