Default I got some new lead today

A guy I know brought me some lead. He had two flashings off a roofing job about 5 pounds. He also had a lead pipe about 8 to 10 pounds. He also had a large piece of Xray room lead. In all I would guess it was about 30 pounds of lead in all. He wants me to make him 50 LEE REAL bullets in trade. I told him I would melt it down and make ingots. After I made the ingots I would let him know if it was a deal.
I melted the flashing and the pipe together. I did the xray lead in a different batch. I had a lot of dental lead that needed to get melted down so I did that is a separate batch. I tested each ingot and averaged them.
The pipe and flashing ended up being about 7 BHN a little harder than I thought it would be. The XRAY lead ended up being about 6 BHN. The dental lead ended up being a little softer than my last batch but it was still 10 BHN.
I have wanted to test these different types of lead for some time. I called him and told him I would do the trade. One thing I did notice was I didn't see any of the blue gold and green colors I see when I melt the virgin lead from Rotometal. The lead from Rotometal is butter soft and when the test is being done you have to read it quick because the dial will drop due to the point sinking into the lead.
This will give me some different lead to play with this next winter. I would like to test it out for paper patched bullets and accuracy.
He told me he works for a recycler so he can get about all he wants any time he wants. We might be doing more trading in the future if the accuracy is good enough. Ron

Nice. I have used lead pipe for maxiballs. I have no clue about hardness. My mold is sized for pure lead or something near it, and if a bullet loads normally I shoot them. If they are too tight I just melt them for fishing weights.

I've used a lot of roof flashing and it's usually been dead soft. What you have to be careful of is the roof jacks. There are some that are soldered together where the upright tube meets the flat base. If you include that section in the pot it will harden the whole batch just a little. When I get a soldered one I cut that section off and discard it.

I have used the lead that came fr om the roof of an old barn for many years friend gave me about 500 pounds when he took the barn down. It is a bit of a pain as it is in sheets about 3/16 thick and I have to cut it up and melt it down and cast ingots but it is very soft and makes fine round balls.

You can never have too many sources for lead. Tom.
