Default yukon and blackhorn 209

a few months ago a friend of mine bought a traditions yukon, he didn't like the short barrel and offered it to me for $100 and it was still in the box. today i finally got to shoot it, i bought some blackhorn 209, federal 209a primers, and 295 grain powerbelt hollow point. i'm shooting 1inch groups with 80grains of powder do yall think thats enough to deliver the energy to stop a whitetail? thanks

I have not kept up with PowerBelts, but many have complained about fragmentation and lack of penetration if they are shot at higher velocities. IMO a better constructed bullet is the Hornady FPB which are made in 300 and 350 gr. I shoot the 350 with 100 gr loose pyrodex and have gotten passthroughs from 35 to almost 100 yds. If the 295 gr PB works well for you, maybe the 300 gr FPB will too.

+ 1 And not as expensive either, the 350 does well on elk also.

Although im not a PB fan .....a milder charge 80gr-90gr and a heavy PB will get it done for sure. There is no need to push them harder since they are softer lead and will expand well at low velocity.

The only PB i use is the 45-300gr Plat and i have no doubt it will kill anything i hunt and do it it very well. IMO the heavier/longer PBs have enough sectional density to make up for most other issues. Just dont push them too hard.

Thanks to MD and a Cabelas sale i have a good stock of the 45-300s because i refuse to pay retail on them.

I shot mine into tough media and they held on to over 220grs and i was pushing them with 100grs of BH209. IMO in an animal they would likely hold a bit more. In a 50cal i would consider a PB over 300gr just to keep that SD high. They actually held up better than a 45-300gr XTP on the same day and on the same media.

As far as energy, that load is easily in the 50A&E area and barking up near 50 Beowulf levels. Either is plenty for deer hit in the kill zone.

How many NA game have been taken by the good old 45/70 with loads from 50-70gr of BP and bullets from 300-405grs?...they nearly wiped out the Buffalo/Bison.

I'm not a powerbelt fan either but I wouldn't hesitate to shoot a white tail with that load. I'm elk hunting next weekend with 85gr of BH and a 350gr FPB. If I get a shot at a cow, 200 yards or less, It's going to fly!

CC - I'm interested in your zero range and your trajectory at 200.

I estimated a trajectory for the 350 FPB with 100 gr loose pyrodex and thought with a 125 yd zero it was good to 150 no problem. Just curious, thanks.
