lonewolf - My 1858 New Army favors Pyrodx P. It's dirty for certain, but the most consistant/accurate. 777 works 2nd best for me. I do not lube over the ball either. A lot of folks do this but I have never felt the need for anything other than a felt wad over the powder. Extra effort and more mess to deal with in my opinion.

They're a lot of fun! I plan to attempt to take a doe with mine this year.

Good luck with you new gun!

While I really like my Pietta 1858 New Army .44 caliber. If I had to do it all over again, I would have spent the extra and got a Ruger. I do lube over the cylinders and even use a wad. One chain fire was more then enough to last me a life time.

Love my Rugers.
There are a number of options this is what works for me.
RWS caps-.457 diameter balls- 38gr of Pyrodex P
This is what groups best at 50 yards and what I use for Boar hunting.

Hope you have a lot of fun with yours. The Rugers are sturdy, but I still like mine better. It is a Uberti:

I think it is prettier too.

I have to agree rafsob. Rugers are pure quality and built like a vault (I have 3 Ruger handguns), but that Uberti is a lot more pleasing to my eyes.
