Well, I've got a plan to sell off a few guns to build funds for the possible purchase of a custom flintlock. But I sure can't seem to stick to it.
Just used some accumulated funds to buy a gun that for reasons unknown caught my attention. Most of you know how that goes.
I don't recall seeing one of these before (although the memory is going downhill fast - and it's a steep hill).
This is a CVA 12 Gauge "Gobbler" model. It shoulders beautifully for me and weighs a mere 5 lbs. 10 oz. I can't tell if it's choked, but I suspect it has something like a modified choke. I can get a shot cup from a Federal shell started in the bore, but it takes a little wiggling and twisting.
I searched the CVA site and can find nothing on it. I assume it hasn't been made for some years.
The SN is 61-XX-XXXXXX-93 and has what appears to be "Q.2" over the SN, but it may be "G.2". Do any of you CVA guys know if either the first or last number of the SN indicates date of manufacture?

Shame on you. Here I bought that gun just so you could be that much closer to getting your custom flintlock and you blow it. Oh yeah I forgot about the part that says "thou shalt not lie". Ok I guess I really bought it because I needed a Zouave , don't everyone? Congrats on that Gobbler. You should have it and the custom flintlock. You deserve that much Right? Me, well I hope to be shooting the Zouave by the weekend.
1993 sounds about right when they were around. They are supposed to hold a good pattern. There was a lot of talk about them many years ago. That is a heck of a find there. That should make a good turkey gun and some upland game birds as well.

The barrel is 28" arcticap. Deer655, the guy I bought it from said it's never been fired. I believe him.
Now the big question is - do I play with it or try to sell it "new/unfired" for a modest profit. I've got powder, wads, overshot cards, caps, #4 shot, #6 shot, #7.5 shot, and some 000 Buck. Decisions, decisions. I also have a 12 GA. Pedersoli double that I hardly ever shoot. So why do I like this little single barrel so much?

It is not a matter of need. Its a matter of want. And if you want it you keep it. That is one reason I bought a new englander 12 gauge. I wanted it.
