Default !&*%ing RUST!!!!

That cva mountain stalker has rust all in the barrel and I can't get it all out. I'm just going to have to take it in and have it done professionally I guess...

Other than a re-bore, I don't think a professional can do anything for it that you can't do yourself with a little study and elbow grease. Find some detailed threads/discussions/instructions on barrel lapping using a lead plug and give it a go.

Evapo-rust follow the directions. After all the rust is out then if you need to lap because of rust use a lead slug poured in the barrel and grinding compound and expect the caliber to increase. Some times if they very bad it is easier to just replace the barrel.

a lead lapping plug is easy to make. Get yourself a new bronze brush and degrease it. Roll a patch up in a ball and push it down the barrel about 6". Place the brush in the bore leaving the threads sticking out enough so that you don't get lead on them. Melt enough lead to completely fill all the areas between the brush's bristles. Use a ladle and pour the lead down the bore all around the brush. Don't waste any time cause the cold barrel will quickly cool and solidify the lead. Its a good idea to have the barrel in a padded vise for this. You don't have to worry about the lead sticking to the barrel cause lead will not stick to steel. When the lead solidifies screw a cleaning rod onto the threads and pull it out. Grasp the rod by the rotating handle so that the plug will follow the rifling out. Now turn your barrel upside down and the excess lead will fall out. Don't forget to remove the patch. It may be burned up from the lead but get it out anyway. Also trim off any excess lead from the plug.
Now to lap your bore, coat the plug with JB compound or a mild abrasive like polishing compound. When you insert it in the barrel, be sure to line up the rifling. Grasping the rod by the rotating handle, begin lapping, short strokes first then getting longer until you are lapping the entire length of the barrel. A cleaning jag and patch with solvent should be used aftrer about every 50 strokes or so to check on your progress.
Note: This plug can only be used for this bore.
It sounds complicated but really its not. Good luck

I appreciate the explanation, because I was fuzzy on the too.

But my question about "have you used it?" was about the Evapo-Rust.

Excellent description bronco. I am going to print that one. Hope I never need to do it though.

It's on the Evapo-rust website that it will remove bluing but I don't know how long it needs to be in contact for that to result.
