Got lucky and drew a New Mexico muzzle elk tag. I plan on using my .54 TC Greyhawk. Have been using 430 TC maxi balls and shoot pretty good, any other good .54 bullets I should try. I like heavy bullets for elk and plan on shooting 50 yds or less. thanks guys
Now the waiting, planning, dreaming, and hoping begins. Have you started packing gear yet?

Things I've Learned: (1) It's not possible to please everyone, but quite easy to piss everyone off. (2) If you love animals as I do, then you're not a vegetarian. (3) There's no need to act stupid, even if you're very good at it. (4) If you eat right and exercise, don't smoke or drink, you're going to die anyway.
I drew a NM tag about 12 years ago. Man what a fantastic hunt. I was hunting private ground, and saw 10 legal bulls in one day. I ended up shooting a nice 5X5. I could have shot A larger bull, but I passed on the shot. He was only 15 yards away-but he was looking straight at me, and I did not feel comfortable with the shot. I am sure I could have nailed him, but those animals are so majestic that I just could not force myself to take a less than perfect shot.
I shot mine at about 145 yards with a 525 grain 50 caliber bullet that I cast myself.
I am not sure where you are hunting in NM. But where I hunted the cover was broken up pretty good. And most shots would have been over 50yards where I hunted. Even if you are hunting in the Aspens you can shoot over 50 yards. Just an opinion.
I am jealous of your tag. I do hope you kill a biggun. Tom.

I really like the Hornady Great Plains HP HB 425 gr and the No Excuses 460 gr. Both are great bullets , at least out of my Lyman. I lived in new Mexico for 11 years, getting to within 50 yards is tough unless you are set up where you know they are going to be coming through. I was camped out once and woke up to be surrounded by 11 bulls. I watched for a while then one of the boys made some noise and they spooked. It sounded like a freight train plowing through the woods. You could hear branches breaking off as they headed out of there. Kinda cool. The kids loved it.
That's awesome caplock! Which season and unit did you draw? My company is sending me to Albuquerque next year (March 2011-Dec 2011) and I'll be applying for a tag in unit 6C (fingers crossed). Good luck, hope to see some pics next October!
