Default - One Renegade / + One Hawken

Well guys, it's decided. I'm keeping the .58 Green Mountain barrel on the 1" Hawken stock that I refinished in March. The Reneken /Hawkagade is no more. She's pure Hawken now.

TC replaced the Hawken's broken front trigger with a brand spanking new trigger group. I drilled and tapped the tang and mounted a TC hunter peep. The 1:70 twist GM barrel is six inches longer than the standard TC barrel and looks mighty fine on a Hawken stock.

I'm heading to the Honey Hole range Friday evening with supply of tumbled balls, a pound each of GOEX FFg and FFFg, and an assortment of patch thicknesses. Can't wait.

Here she is.

She ain't heavy, she's my Hawken.

That's a nice lookin setup. I believe you will enjoy that peep sight. I installed one on my 58 and it really helps with my ageing eyes. I drilled mine out with a 3/32 drill bit to let in more light and put a white dot on my front sight. It works pretty well in low light conditions.

That is an excellent barrel length, you may be surprised at how much finer you can aim with that length barrel. Lee

My .58 caliber is on a Renegade. And it is a sweet shooter without question. I think that rifle will really surprise you. 110 grains of Goex 2f and a patched roundball.

You need a good butt cover for that bad boy. Tom.

I couldn't comfortably handle any more length to the buttstock HEAD. I'd really like the length of pull to be about a quarter inch shorter.

Hey Sabotloader, I've been thinking about your comment. I agree it's long, but I really like it.

So I got to wondering why this gun pleases me so much even though I've always liked the looks of TC Renegades more than TC Hawkens. I now believe it's a matter of proportion.

I looked at a premium authentic style Hawken on the Track Of The Wolf site, and did some comparisons. On the TOW gun the stock makes up 3/5 (60%) of the total length of the gun - the same as my TC Hawken with the long GM barrel. On a TC Hawken with the factory length barrel, the stock makes up 3/4 (75%) of the total length of the gun.

The TOW gun is here: http://www.trackofthewolf.com/Catego...artNum=AAI-001

(Michelangelo and Picasso would appreciate the difference.)
