Default Interesting flat base conical sub base test

Just out of curiosity and after asking The Man (Del) i had to try this out.

I removed the petals from a MMP 54cal purple sabot and made some moly wads with liquid Alox and Lyman Super Moly.

The range was getting ready to close so i only got to try it with 80grs to start out. I usually site in this flat base conical with 100gr but wanted to play it safer.

Ignore the other small holes in the bullseye, those are from my Extreme 50 on its first day out.

The top 2 54cal holes are with a homemade MMP purple sub base and moly wad. The bottom 2 are without the sub base. Point of impact suggests more fps and accuracy is at least as good.

Hmmmmm

Knight LK93 54 with a Knight/Williams adjustable receiver peep site at 50 yards.

Im going to try it again tomorrow with upto 100gr since ive tested the FPJ and BH209 with that much and it worked fine.

Interesting GM54. That gives me an itch to try cutting some .54 sabots and trying them under 300 grain Lee REALs in my GM barreled Renegade.

Very nice! Don't let others tell you that Blackhorn209 isn't the best choice for conicals! It works P-E-R-F-E-C-T-L-Y With conical. In fact im heading to the NRA for TWO days of 200 yard shooting!

Im still not sure if its good or bad without a chrono but.....

I cant tell that it hurts anything....well besides my shoulder

When i moved upto 100gr with a sub base it did blow the FPJ off the nipple which to me indicates more pressure. I can use the same sabot, charge and a 50cal 385gr Rem CLHP bullet and it doesnt do it. Overall weight of both are fairly close so....

ATM results are inconclusive but it is an interesting test for FLAT BASE conicals.

My Knight slipon recoil pad for my LK93 arrived today so my next session will be a bit more fun.

I really love this gun, it is a hell of a conical shooter and such a simple design.

It seems to work fine for me, even with very loose fitting Lee type hollow base Minies in my Acurra 45. I havent tried to get any groups with those yet but the powder ignites just fine.

I found a few boxes of the old Buffalo Bullets 325gr 45 flat base hollow points too. I got them for $5 a box. They really bring the ole 45 to life.
