Default What a great day shooting PRB's @ the Dinger Farm

Avenger and I were able to make another run to the farm this afternoon to do our final sight in before shooting in the 'Spring Fling' in Orofino on Sunday.

It was a great afternoon for shooting. Nic has been pretty much consumed with this muzzleloader thing - so he is pretty much game to shoot anytime I ask....

One thing... Both Nic and I were going to give 'Pillow Ticking' another try. I had tried last year to make my own from from material bought at Johannes Fabric store and this year I bought some untreated patches off the wall in Tri-State. He was using his new mixture of 'Moose Milk' and I was using another mix made for me by old ML shooter in Troy - that I had met at a Rondy a couple of years ago.

Nic is shooting 80 grains of Pyro select and I am using 60 grains T7-2f. I load a bore button between the powder and the patch because of the heat of T7. Both of us were collecting our patches - his were not very good looking at all - they would have a burned thru slot under the ball and mine just about completely desinegrated - just pieces laying around on the ground. Not to mention the shots were erratic as heck.

I gave up before he did and switched back to my regular .015 all cotton patches. it was not long and Nic was making the switch also. From that point our shooting accuracy increased immensly....

It did not take long to get bored with a paper target so out came the clay pigeons.... placed @ 50,75, and 100 yards. At that point things became competitive, well for this old man anyway.... And in my defense I was not shooting my normal reliable Renegade, i had just gotten a new to me ebay barrel that morning dropped it in my last unused Renegade stock and decided with some encouragement from Nic to shoot it. I was reluctant at first because I was somewhat dissappointed in the condition of the bore. But I yielded and ran a couple of Montana bore conditioner (patches were YUK!) well, we packed it up and headed to the farm. After shooting it - I now declare that i got a really good deal on this old Rene barrel. It shoots great!!!!

It was agreat day at the farm...

Shooting starts @ 10am Sunday morning @ the Spring Fling... uall come ya hear....

Sounds like fun. I wonder if the patches are getting torn while loading?

I looked at that, you could definetly see the mark all the way around the patch where the ball was and the burned spot was inside that rim line - like just off to the side of the bottom of the ball.

Do you think that Select burns at a higher temperatue than does RS? RS is a 2f powder is Select also a 2f or is it 3f? Shows my ignorance of the Pyro powders doesn't it?

select is 2f, it just gets sorted out closer so its more consistent in size. It is bulkier than RS thats for sure.

Thats weird though that the .018 pillow ticking is getting burned up like that. I wonder if the shallow rifling in the tc is possibly "stripping" as it comes back out the bore and just tears the heck out of them. I hate it when stuff like this happens! Makes you think until your head hurts LOL.

Next time, try double patching. By double patching i mean to push a bare patch on top of the powder and then load your normal patched round ball down on top of that. I had a CVA mtn rifle that wanted that done in order for it to shoot tight.

Select is graded 2F. It doesn't have the "fines" that RS has and the granules all seem (to me} to be larger and more consistent than RS granules. I've never noticed any great difference in accuracy between Select and RS, but haven't really done a side-by-side test with the two. Sounds like a homework assignment.

I too have found I need a wad under T7 most of the time. But Pyrodex doesn't burn my olive oil lubed patches.

Guess it is no big deal because the cotton Ox-Yoke patches shoot just fine from both of our Renegades...

Thank you an Semi for the information on Pyro...

Sounds like a great day shooting. When I shoot the Triple Seven powder I have to use a wad. Pyrodex seldom burns my patches. But shooting clay birds at 100 yards with the open sights is good shooting. Were you using a six o'clock sight picture?

Oh gosh yes! and then you just saw a speck of orange just above the blade - well that is all I saw. Nic's eyes are a lot better than mine he may have been able to see more or it was more distiguished... The center shot by me @ a 100 was just plane ---- ----- luck, but it was fun to one up the Marine.... He broke all of his to pieces...

Just put 2+2 together. I am David From Texas that you talked to last night about my LRH bolt! Figured you would probably be on some of the blackpowder forums. Have always enjoyed your posts and your knowledge. Thanks again for all your help

Thats some mighty impressive shooting with iron sights. I wish I could still use iron sights but cant focus anymore with my 55 year old eyes. Unless I'm missing something were you using round balls during this shooting. If so that even more impressive.
