Default Another Great Day at the range

Another beautiful day here in Northern Wisconsin. It was sunny, no wind, and in the 50's . I mean what more could you ask for. So I made up a target and headed for the range. I was able to get to 66 yards yesterday, but I noticed the snow was really down, so I took it all the way back to the steel pit today. I got three reading on the range finder.. 84, 86, and 85 so I called it 85 yards.

Since I could not put myself through the agony of yesterday's open sight shooting. And prior I had shot my .451 White Model 97 and someone wanted to know what would happen at further distances. And since I had not shot my White Ultra Mag .504 in a long time, I decided to give the Ultra Mag the nod today.

I got nice and comfortable behind the rifle and fired off two shots.

I was hitting a little high, but then the rifle is sighted in for 100 yards. I would not think 15 more yards would have made that difference, but at least the first two were close together. Also I then thought ... the barrel is squeaky clean, and has Montana X-treme Bore treatment in it. So lets just keep shooting. The next four were much better. And I adjusted my POA for #7. I have a thing about hitting the bulls eye. So I was pleased. That is what a White will do with 80 grains of Triple Seven 2f and a .5045 Bull Shop Conical. No wads, and CCI magnum caps.

I then swabbed the barrel clean and decided to test Goex, Pyrodex P and finally Triple Seven 2f again. I started with 70 grains of Goex 3f and the same weight conical.

I was more then pleased with the way the rifle shot Goex. So I swabbed the barrel with Birchwood Casey #77 and then decided to test it with the Pyrodex P.

I know a lot of people claim 70 grains of Pyrodex P and these conicals shoot real well, but my Ultra Mag always does better with Triple Seven for some reason. The rests kind of prove that point.

I was a little shocked with the Pyrodex P. The first two hits were out of the bull even. But as the barrel got a little fouled, it started to behave a little better. My White shoots best on a dirty barrel. And that is a fact.

I then swabbed the barrel again and decided to shoot the Triple Seven for the last corner bull. If I had not seen this, and done this, I am still kind of shocked. I never swabbed or checked the target. I just shot the three shots, then checked the target.

To say that did not bring a smile to my face is an understatement. I will note, the shooting conditions were about perfect. Even the sun placement and the reflection of it on the target was perfect. And I took my time and was really concentrating on the trigger pull and how I addressed the weapon. But I really was happy with that group.

So over all I proved to myself that with good optics, I can still shoot past 30 yards.. But most of all I find that when I shoot that Ultra Mag it just makes a great day at the range..

I know a lot of folks say it is really boring to shoot a White, but you know what as a shooter of the White you sure do get a good feeling about everything, especially when you look at your T7 offering....

Were these your famous 500 grain BShops?

Dang! i wish I could get out and do some more shooting - but I am stuck here...

Nice shooting Dave. It looks like your gun really likes 777. Does your ultra mag have a larger bore than your .504 bison or do you get the bullshops sized the same for both guns?

Do you think it was the Montana x treme treatment that allowed you to shoot that well without swabbing. I would think that after about 3-4 shots that they would be mighty hard to get down the barrel without swabbing.

While the Montana X-treme does keep the bore of the rifle in top condition, I personally think it is the design of the rifle and how they work that makes me able to shoot without swabbing the bore.

The White Rifle system is a high quality rifle and barrel. They are designed to shoot a slip fit conical. That means if the bore of the rifle is .504 then normally that bullet diameter is the same for best accuracy. I have actually shot over 20 shots without swabbing the rifle and while towards the end they start to load different, they do not load hard. You'd have to watch someone load a White with a slip fit conical. You seat the bullet with two fingers on the ramrod.

Actually my Ultra Mag shoots a .5045 best. The barrel bore measured .5045. The Bison has a different barrel maker and even though it is listed as .504 diameter it shoots a .503 or .5035 best. I shoot the No Excuses 460 grain out of it and they are .503.

Now Sabotloader got his hands on a Ultra Mag and discovered it is a fantastic sabot shooter. He has really pushed that limits of his White to do some amazing accuracy with sabots. I am not a sabot shooter in my White. I have other rifles for that.

Also cleanup was not that bad. Now granted with the open breech design and the fact I use a simple #11 cap for ignition, the breech of my rifle is FILTHY. That is OK with me. I know it is going to happen and I do not mind cleaning it. I have to put a bra on the scope. But other then that, the barrel itself cleans up really easy.

Also that Nikon Pro Staff.. while it is 2-7x32mm that has to be one of the best scopes for the money I have ever used. It is crystal clear, and tough. It has taken over 600 rounds now under its self, and never went out of line. And I take the scope off when I clean the rifle. I use Warne QR rings on the scope. It just makes cleaning the rifle that much easier.

That is some fantastic shooting Cayugad. If your face starts to hurt you may have to take a couple of 80 yard shots with the irons just to make that frozen smile go away.

Funny about that Pyrodex P. I've seen the reports of excellent accuracy by some shooters. But, so far, I haven't been able to get good groups with it.

Pyrodex P works real good in my other White rifles, but this Ultra Mag likes Triple Seven 2f. Now I would have thought that 3f would be better but for some reason it does not group them as well.

It sure was a beautiful day out there. Although I can tell I had a T shirt on and no jacket. It was 60 degrees before I was done shooting. My shoulder took a little beating today. But it does not matter.
