Default A little homework

Back in early January I found a .504 G Series White and got it out for the first time today. This is what the rifle looks like:

The DWB's tell me this is a pretty early White. The barrel on this one has 12 grooves.
The weather was pretty decent. It got up to the mid 20's and there was very little wind.
This was my first experience shooting heavy conicals. I was shooting some 460 grain UC shorts that were sized at .5035. It was nice shooting something that slides right down the barrel with very little effort. For powder I was using 70 grains of Triple 7 3f. It was plenty stout of a load.
I am tickled to death with the kind of accuracy I was getting. Sorry I don't have pictures this time. I was shooting at 45 yards with open sights using a cardboard box on top of a garbage can for a rest and it was stacking them.
The only negative is a few times it failed to set the caps off. After the outside of the nipple got a little dirty it seemed like it took one hammer strike to set it deeper and the second one set it off. After I was done shooting I got the caliper out and the White nipple is slightly bigger arround than the Knight nipples I'm use to. I was using CCI magnum caps and they have not let me down in the past. I may have to find a way to take a little off this nipple.
Overall I had a great time. I hadn't shot since December.

Nice...

I still have my G-Series in .451. I remember working on the nipple with 0000 steel wool until I got the cap to fit fully seated, and just snug enough to fire off every time.

And it took a lot of of buffing... that SS breech plug/nipple is really hardened.

Good Luck... Rob

My White .451 does the same thing. The first time it sets the cap and the next time it fires it. Mine got so consistent one afternoon that I would set the cap first, then dump the powder and load the conical. Worked like a charm.

That is a nice looking rifle. Until people shoot a White they just can not picture how accurate they are. These things will really shoot...

This one also had the 209 hammer and breech plug with it. I would rather find a way to get the #11 caps to fire consistently though. I have some Remington caps that are a tiny bit shorter, I may try them next time.

I believe that might be two different strengths hammer springs. When I order some for my U-Mag form Doc - he asked which spring do you want the heavy spring or the original?
