Default Interesting APP finding - UPDATE

I was talking with Brett from American Pioneer powder this evening, Awesome guy with a lot of knowledge of the powder. He told me that shockeys gold has a lower temp rate * goes off faster* Has an additive that makes it cleaner than regular APP, Slightly faster than regular APP.

Lubed bullets shouldnt be used with APP as it will draw the moisture from the lube and contaminate the powder.

I think some of the other writers have been misleading with this powder. Im not sure about the sticks but ive almost used up the pound that i bought last week and its been the easiest powder to use so far. I never thought i'd shy away from RS but this is pretty nice to shoot now.

Who else is currently shooting this stuff?
--------------------------------------------------------------------

After a week outside in the shop in temps of 60* / 55* / 1.6* and in the teens at night, the rifle fired off the APP 2f - 245gr Powerbelt with zero problems, Not even a hang fire. And to my surprise i hit center and 4" low. Not bad for a rifle that has never been sighted in LOL.

Heres a movie clip. ( Vido may still be processing)

I've used the Shockey's Gold and liked it. But it gave me very low velocities. Consistent, but low.

I don't know what there sight claims, but my son uses the sticks and I chrono'd them at right around 1650 to 1700 fps with 3 sticks and a 295 a/t powerbelt about 3 yrs ago. Not much velocity for 150 grns.

thats another thing, 3 sticks do produce lower fps. The 150gr super sticks will product more FPS than the 3 pellets loads. The 100gr super stick again, produces more than two 50gr stick loads.

With those velosities the powder should be much more accurate than if it was pushing say 1900++. It may be a reason that it is a accurate powder in some MLers.

i dont know what kind of velocity 100gr 2f APP has but with a 308gr powerbelt, that accura was kicking my rear end today. Either that or it just felt like it due to me putting the scope on. My nose still hurts.

A 150gr Super Stick is comparable to 2 T7 Magnum Pellets.

Several years ago i used a lot of granular APP, then called Clean Shot. Started experimenting with JSG in about late 05 and used it extensively on deer and wild hogs for a few years before switching to Goex Pinnacle. Goex Pinnacle is no longer available, so i'll just go back to JSG granular when my supply runs out.

IMO: The JSG sticks stink. You have to crush them to get it to light properly. Not sure about the super sticks.

APP, JSG and Goex Pinnacle have a very good time to pressure. They are able to get good velocity from much lower pressure than the other powders. That is why the breech plug is easy to remove after firing 20-30 rounds.

JSG 3F is much more powerful than APP. Yep, JSG is not as powerful as 777, thats why i use more of it. There is sometimes a long learning curve for a guy who has never used JSG. Some never get it right. JSG likes a tight fitting sabot seated very hard on the powder. Put a furniture knob or golf ball on the end of the ramrod and lean on it with both hands. A consistent loading pressure from shot to shot is very important when using JSG. If you start to get vertical stringing you ain't doing it right.

I looked back through my old Mustang targets (Oct `07) and found a couple where I chronographed some JSG loads. Here's the data.

90 grains volume of powder & 385 gr Hornady Great Plains (5 shot averages)
JSG = 1018 fps
Pyrodex RS = 1144 fps
T7 FFFG = 1583

105 grains volume of powder & 300 grain Gold Dot/H5045 sabot (5 shot averages)
JSG = 1264 fps
T7 FFFG = 1835 fps
