Get a longer ramrod, that's my only tip, I've never shot RBs.

Well there is a lot of opinions but here is the way I see it.
1 in 70 is an excellent RB hunting twist it works best with a hunting load usually 110 + in a 54 caliber don't be surprised when it shoots well out to 150 yds and knocks down a lot of game on the spot 54 is one of the best with a PRB use a 535 or a 530 ball so far the .535 has always been more accurate for me. Pyrodex is a very good powder for shooting PRB 777 will blow the patch unless you fool around with wads etc. and Blackhorn is not suitable for use in that type gun the ascorbic extract powders are not reliable under hunting conditions in my opinion [I tried them for two years and gave up one day the would shoot an inch the next they would be all over and I would try some Pyrodex and be right back in the minute of angle] also I never found any better patching than ticking usually the 18 to 22 thousands thick. A lot of the caps on the market are weak and courting trouble the RWS if you can get the are good or the CCI mag. Put your ball down hard and try to keep it the same pressure or use a ramrod with a stop it makes a difference in your group size. With a 54 and more than 100 gr of powder I would sight in a couple inches high at 100yds, Wipe every shot until the barrel is broken in. Lee

You're going to love that barrel and .54 balls Thumper. Here's the last report I posted on mine. http://huntingnet.com/forum/black-po...ry-report.html

The barrel seems to be getting better the more I shoot it.

Semisane,
I wish you would try some 110 gr loads with that rifle at longer range. My 1in 70 twist shot well at 50 yds with most loads I tried but did not do well at 100yd and farther until I tried heavier loads but it did well at 177yds at friendship with 120gr I would have won if I had not pulled one of the off hand shot a bit; even so I was not unhappy with a 19 inch string measure. Congratulations on the new barrel. Your going to be amazed at how well it shoots. Mine likes 110 grains of Goex 2f and a patched ball. I will really lay them in there. The only thing I dislike is fiber optic sights on a traditional rifle. But you learn to live with them.

Heck, you can even learn to live with a scope. ( And love it. )

Well, the bbl ain't even here an I'm gettin' geeked!! I don't shoot open sites worth a hoot! I do have a set of scope bases (TC). Or most likely, a peep. Once I get her tuned, oughta be good fer a100yds, maybe 125. WE shall see!! Never have shot pyrodex though. Only goex, swiss and T7.
