Default Newbie to Blackpowder

Newbie to blackpowder! I just bought a Traditions LT Accelerator Muzzleloader w/ 3-9x32 scope, camo w/ nickle barrel. Looking for some loads others use. It will be primarily used for hunting whitetails, however may take it with me to hunt Black Bear. Also when you post your favorite load you use, can you tell me why you like it. Hopefully heading to the range Sunday to shoot it for the first time. Thanks.

Default My Load-but-Maybe Not Yours

The load I use is 90 grains of Triple Seven FFG and a Hornady 250 gr SST. That combo shoots well in my T/C Omega, but that doesn't mean it will shot accurately in yours.

Every ML has different loads that shot tight groups. Expect to go through a lot of powder and various bullets to find what your rifle will shoot.

Thoms got it right. I'd get a few different kinds of bullets (I'd at least try 250gr SSTs and 240gr XTPs at first) and then work your powder charge up from about 80gr until you get some good groupings.

Some MLs will NOT perform at mag charges, 120gr+ and the shooters will have to settle for the lower velocity they get in turn for more accuracy. However, get the right bullet and you will probably get something you can push faster if you really think you need to.

See, Thom is shooting only 90gr T7 3f (roughly equivalent to 100gr of the powder I use) with the same bullet I push with 130gr pyro RS to get accuracy, and we have the same gun! I won't shoot lighter charges, cause I'm expecting longer shots in the wide-open areas I hunt.

I use 100 gr. pyrodex with 250 gr. sabet. Not all guns shoot the same. If you choose to go with loose granulars instead of pre-fixed pellets. This gives you more adjustment when at the range. At first I was shooting 90 gr. buck my bullet was tipping over at 50 yards. Check your bullet hole in the paper. You will need to adjust your load if your not punching out a perfectly round hole in the paper. If you can load up to 150 gr. in your gun, I would go as high as your gun allowes. This will let you reach out and touch your target further. I always shoot 50 yards and then 100 yards at the range. These guns today can with ease kill at 150-200 yards. Good Luck.

120 grains of pyrodex with a 385 gr buffalo bullet is the only way to go

Well there are some good suggestions to try. Your rifle will tell you what it likes best of all.

90 grains of 777, 250 grain hornady XTP hollow piont, 3 leaf E-Z sabot. Shoots great and dsen't kick bad, which is pretty nice for begginers like us.

BTW just recently shot my first ML deer. Found the bullet in the hide and it was bigger than a qaurter. I will post pics just look for a thread that looks something like that.
