Default powdervs pellets.

Ok gander has both for 24.99 Has anyone figured the cost differnce between buying loose powder vs pellets. I tried figureing the math but could not. Seems to me a 100 pellet box weighs 6.9 oz a pound is like 2.3 times that. So is it 57.99 a pound for pellets

Tim there are 7000 grains to the pound. But because 777 is lighter than blackpowder, there is more grains volume of 777 to a pound. Seems like I heard from someone that there is approximately .71 grains weight of 777 to a grain volume. If so then there is:

7000 / .71 = 9859 grains volume to a pound of 777. That means there are 98 loads at 100 grain volume. There are only 50 2 pellet loads in the box. So you will get nearly twice the loads from the loose. One other thing. The pellet are equivalent to 50 grains of pyrodex in power and so do not have a full 50 grains volume of 777 in a 777 50 grain pellet. So guess what? You could reduce your loose volume to 90 grains and get the same velocity you get with two pellets So if you use 90 loose vs 2 pellets .... you get 11 extra loads from the pound of loose powder bringing the total to 109. Which is more than twice the loads than the box of pellets.

No offense to anyone who uses pellets as I did for years. But Pellets are quick and easy to use, that's why there more money. Are they a better buy for your money, not really. If you want to settle for just 30gr or 50gr pellets and try to get a load that shoots well your handicapped. You may get lucky, but nothing beats loose powder for accuracy and price. With loose powder you can get a custom load that shoots the best in your ML and more of them than the cost of pellets. If you think your ML shoots well with Pellets, try loose powder and work your way up in grains untill you find it's (sweet spot) for the custom load you've found. Your accuracy will be better and your wallet will be fatter.
