So I'm having a problem getting caps to ignite

So I have a muzzle loader that shoots #11 caps. Anyway, I got it out to sight it in yesterday. I noticed it was having a problem. The first time the bolt or whatever you'd call it slid forward to hit the cap the cap didn't go off. If you pulled it back and then pulled the trigger the 2nd time it hit the cap it would go off. I'm using Winchester Magnum BP caps that Wallyworld sells. I used these last year also and don't remember this problem. It did it most if not all shots.

So I got home cleaned the gun up and thought maybe it needed lube as maybe the bolt wasn't sliding fast enough. I put some break free clp on there and then tried it tonight. It still doesn't work. Every cap I tried tonight did it where I had to shoot it for it not to go off then re**** it and it would go off the 2nd hit every time. I then opened up another pack of the Winchester Magnum BP caps. The same thing I just had one unopened and tried those. The same thing.

Now these caps I bought on clearance at Wal-Mart either last year or the year before at the end of ML season I can't remember.

I finally found my Remington caps I had. These are 2 years old now. I only had 5 left but tried 3 and all three went off on the first pull of the trigger like they were supposed to.

Does it sound like these Winchester caps are the problem or is it something else likely causing this? Anything I should try or is it a safe bet Remingtons will work since all 3 I tried did where none of the Winchesters did?

Anyone else had this problem? I guess now I just need to find where I can buy some Remington #11 caps.

sounds like its time for a new nipple. Remington #11s have always fit a little looser than the winchesters ( actually cci's) What rifle are you shooting?

It's a Marlin MLS 50. Is there anywhere I can get new nipples for this thing with overnight shipping? I need this gun for this weekend. Or would really like to have it. Are there any other guns this nipple is common with?

BTW will changing nipples affect how the POI when shooting this? I don't really have time to re sight it in.

BTW how can I tell if the nipple is good or bad? I have a extra one that is used I got with the muzzle loader. However, while I can tell it's used I'm not sure how to tell it's good or bad. Not even sure it fits but I'm going to try to fit it.

I have had a similar problem with a Ruger 77/50. If I place the #11 cap on the nipple with my fingers, the first pull of the trigger seats the cap, the second pull of the trigger fires it off. If I place the #11 cap firmly on the nipple with a capper, the first pull of the trigger will make it go off every time.

The caps you are having a problem with are stamped #11 versus #10?

Well, this other one fits but doesn't fit tight really. I don't think it will work. Plus the hole is very tiny through it you can barely see light where as the one that was in it you could see through. I bet this will be a pita to find.

#11 caps for sure. I've tried putting them on with the capper.

Just pull the nipple and lightly file around the top 1/16" to slightly reduce the diameter. Or, when you put the cap on push it down as hard as you can to make sure it's fully seated against the top of the nipple.

you can take your nipple out and use a little sand paper to take it down slightly in size. I honestly thing the nipple has a little flare at the tip and the first hammer blow just seats it.

Is the face of the hammer clean?
