Default Bullet ?

In getting started with blackpowder I picked up several packs of different bullets. One of them is a pack of Knight 240 grain sabots and on the back of the pack it says "Knight Saboted bullets work well with all muzzleloading rifles that have a 1:48 twist or faster." I thought most of them have a 1:26 or so twist. I guess they will be OK for shooting silhouettes or punching paper or do I need to exchange them?

It's hard to tell without knowing what you will be shooting them in...The Hornady 240s have been used with good success since the mid-80s in inlines with the 1-28 or 1-32 twist...

Well some 240 grain bullets do shoot well out of a 1-48 twist. It all depends on the rifle. If I had a rifle with that twist, I would be shooting roundball or conicals.

Timbercruiser, your Knight Vision has a 1:28 twist and should shot those bullets fine.

I have been trying to figure out that puzzle since I started shooting BP in Janury. My T/C Omega 1:28" twist in a .50 caliber loves 110gr. of BH209 with a 290gr. Barnes TMZ. That combo is too expencive for range shooting. With that combo, I am very confedent with out to 150yds. holding a 2" MOA but that is on a bench and that is with a peep. I have yet to find and inexpencive combo that duplicates thoes results. Right now I am experimenting with the Harvester Crushed Rib Sabots, Knight black sabots and the Knight orange sabots with a 250gr. lead cast bullet. The powder I am using is T7 FFg. I am pretty sure I need a heavier bullet but have not found a cast for a .451 or .452 that is 300gr. I have basicly accepted the inaccuracy of the less expencive sabot, bullet, powder combo. Dont get me wrong, I can still hold a 4" MOA at 100yds but that is a far cry from the 2" MOA at 150yds that it is capable of. My other ML is a Traditions Hawken Woodsman 1:48" twist also in a .50. That rifle loves a .491, 170gr. patched round ball and 80gr. of pyrodex. That combo is not very expencive and I can use it for hunting and paper punching. I have found that what works for one person or ML may not work for another even if the rifle is the same make and model. Good luck and welcome to the world of MLng. Have fun.
