Default Rust & Pitting

I was asked by a guy in our club of how to get rust out of his Firehawk barrel.
Hoppies #9 didn't work even with brass brush.
Any other products for the rust and I have no clue about getting rid of the pitting.
Thanks in advance for any help...I will relay the info.
Chuck

I would recommed some JB Bore Paste. It will remove the rust but of course will not help with the pitting. I would to a real tight patch fit scrub. Clean the rifle first, then put a good quality gun oil down through the bore. After that with a tight fitting patch, a heavy amount of JB Bore Paste. It will work into the pitting that way, and he can scrub the rust all out. Every twenty or thirty strokes, change the patch. Do about 100 strokes. Then clean the rifle bore and remove to oil it back up as you have it down to bare metal.

Exactly what Cayugad suggest. Another method using JB is to wrap a patch around a brass brush and apply the JB. But put the gun oil down the bore first.
Fof a 50 cal rifle, a 28 gauge shotgun brush works great.

There is a substance call navel jell which is used to remove all types of corrosion. There is not much short of re-barreling that can be done about pitting. Lee

Vinager will remove rust. Plug the breach plug fill the bore with vinager and let stand overnight. Pour out the next morning and scrub with a brush and follow up with patches untill it comes clean. One word of caution, vinager will also remove any blueing that it comes in contact with. Any pitting will probably be permanent damage.

JB bore paste is a good idea, but I found something that is not that abrasive. I use Blue Wonder. It comes in a tube and is very effective. I use it with 0000 steel wool. It can also be used on blued metal with not harm to the finish.

If your friend has really bad rust and even some nasty pitting, you may have to use the JB bore paste. If it is not that servere, then the BW will work fine.

Give it a try
