Today's Quick Range Session

lemoye's thread on accuracy got me thinking so I took my Genesis to the range to shoot some 100yrd targets. I havn't done that in a while.

There was a light rain and high humidity so not optimal shooting conditions but it's fun to shoot anyway.

I started out with .400 200g XTPs pushed by 100g BH in a Crush Rib with W209s. This is the load I plan to use this year for CO pronghorn.

This was the first group. Measured 2 1/2



As I posted his lemoye's thread, Ifeel like for myself anything less than 3 inches would be fine. I think I can get this to shrink if I played w/the charge a little more-and concentrated a little more [&o] (There was a weirdo beside me shooting a fully automatic gun that had me a wee bit uneasy)

I had some .430 300g XTPs with me so I tried those as well. This time I only loaded 80g of BHw/a Crush Rib and W209.



Understandably they shot lower but not bad. 2 3/4. The first two shots were the ones nearly touching. I waited for the barrel to cool on those. But shots 3,4 and 5 I shot as fast as I could reload. (Supper was ready at home and I wanted to shoot one more group w/the 200gs) As you can see they opened up a good bit. I think one day I'll give it enough time to cool and really see what it'll do.

Lastly, I went back to the 200g XTPs and shot one more group. No cooling between shots. By this time the rain was really coming down as you can see by the wrinkled target.



That group also measured 2 1/2. I've shot 1 inch groups with this gun before but it's not an everyday thing by any means. Nonetheless, I was pleased.Any of those groups would have been meat on the table so I can't complain. But there's always room for improvment right?

The optimum twist for that bullet figures out to 1-35. Due to the shortness of the bullet I never go over 90 gr and some times a bit less will make them shoot better. Just my opinion[you know how much free things are worth].

Looking good TN. Have you shot those bullets from the Genesis with Triple 7 or Pyrodex? If so, how did the groups compare?

shooting in drizzle or rain is tuff. Its one more thing to concentrate on at the same time. Nice shooting. I have to try that load in my Genesis.

lemoyne, didn't know that about the twist rate... I've got 1 1/4 groups with my 700ML with the 200g w/100g of 777 so I figured Ishould be able to get the same out of the Genesis. I only was pushing it that hard because of the lighter weight bullet... I'll see what 90 does next time I get a chance. Thanks for the info.

Semisane, not in this Genesis (stainless, laminate thumbhole). The only thing that's been shot out of it has been BH. My other blue/black one I shotPyrodex, 777 and BHout of it. Pyrodex RS and BH shot best out of it though. 777 was just a touch less accurate-but not much. In fact, now that I think about it. I killed deer w/all 3 different powders in it.

Very nice shooting. XTP'S are a great bullets and very effective on game.

Same here I shoot them from a 1/28 all they time and they are exprememly accurate from all of them. I shoot them with a 110 grains of T7 so i am running them out the barrel a little faster, but again really accurate.

Also though Lee did throw in a qualifier statement - 'free infromation' and I think we have all learned that you really need to dhoot it to know for sure...

I also know when i go to shoot a Speer 40/180 grain which is shorter than the 200 XTP - from a 1/48 i really do not get much - thay actually shoot better from a 1/48.
