Here's one I picked up at a Pawn Shop for $60abt 2 yrs back. It was a kit-gun that the previous owner hadn't got around to finishing.
Made along the lines of a plain-vanilla Hawken, it was missing the under-rib and thimbles and had a loose front sight blade.
I scrounged out some spares and brazed the blade solid, putting it into useable condition.
Now, this next pic may shock some, but the original stock was
extremely plain, left way too blonde for my tastes and with unremarkable grain.
I stained it darker and added a "rope-burn" camo finish and a handful of 'medicine-tacks'... no way I'd do this to a nice piece of Circassion!
Seems to like a tightly patched ball. I used a .445 Hornady RB, .020 patch and 50 gn of FFF grade Triple 7.
Not the most powerful load, as you can see, but wants to group pretty well...
And now the obligatory 60 yd group, 5 shots, no swabbing between shots...
Not exactly a tack-driving powerhouse, but I figure if I keep my shots close, it should bag me my first PRB deer this fall.
I'll keep y'all posted on how it goes...
HH All!
