I never thought I would say this but I like to shoot my new to me Traditions Hawken Woodsman more than any other gun I own. She sure is purdy and fun to shoot. Accurate to boot! Why didnt yall tell me this in the first place? I shot it today just to give me an excuse to clean it!
Why? Because we couldn't see another person going to the dogs. But alas it is too late - Another addiction has begun.
My addiction started back in the early 70s with a T/C flinter. It has gradually progressed to the point where there are 2 flinters, 4 caplocks and one inline, several bullet moulds, a cabinet full of different bullets and balls, a couple ammo boxes of powder, etc, etc, etc. Hopefully I now have my addiction under control. Some in here are in a more advanced stage of the addiction than I, so have pity on them.

I'm not as good as I'm gonna get - but I'm better than I used to be. "Life without God is like an unsharpened pencil - it has no point."
What you mean is so true. I own two of them. One has the 1-66 twist for roundball and the other a 1-48 twist. They are a beautiful rifle with excellent wood, and a fast lock. I think they are fun to shoot too.

What's sad is that there are "muzzleloading" hunters out there that have never shot a side hammer...
I'm 53 years old and shot my first muzzleloader in '75...Guess what??? I still remember that first shot!!!
I don't remember my first shot with an inline...
Wanna have some fun??? Find you a good hunting load for deer, sight in about 2 inches high at 50 yards with it...Then cut that load in half and play with the load and sights until you have it hitting dead on at 25 yards...Now you can deer hunt with your higher charge and squirrel hunt with your half load...Once you can kill 4-5 squirrels a morning with head shots you'll understand why we won the Battle of King's Mountain...
As I recall Powerfisher, your question in an earlier post was "What Have I Gotten Myself Into?" Well, now you know. Sidelocksare likeskinny dipping - if you haven't done it you can'tappreciate how much fun it is.
WARNING - Do notever shoot a flintlock. (It's like skinny dipping with a girl.)

A little spark to get you excited but nothing to show for it in the end but a lot of smoke??

If you're slow and careful with the priming, you can usually get a bang.
..........EDIT: Where's Corey when you need him?

My new addict.......errrr, I mean hobby already has me looking at Flinters. I want to get a real nice one though. Dont get me wrong, I already have what I concider nice rifles, 2-MLs and 4-Centerfires but the Flintlock......I would like to drop a bundle on. Sugestions?
If you want one flintlock that you will always love, consider a custom built one. They can be had for around $1000.00 - $1,800.00 depending on the features and fancys you want. They are a pleasure to own and to shoot. My next flintlock will be one of them.
Careful of cheap flintlocks with bad locks. They can really turn you off from rock locks. Some of the production ones out there of quality are Lyman, Thompson Center, and I have a flintlock Traditions Woodsman Hawkins in .50 caliber that is just sweet..
