Default Excellent cleaning patch material

Guys - I thought I would share this with you. The wife was at Walmart looking at material for new curtains a while back and when I caught up with her after my trip to the sporting goods section, I happened to notice some white flannel. This stuff is <$3.00 a yard (36"x60"). I have found this stuff to be great for cleaning your ML. I got 2 yards again on Saturday. And cut into 1 1/4" squares, I get roughly 1300 patches for $6. I cut it into 1 1/4" strips on a 2x4 using a metal yard stick as a straight edgewith a utility knife then use scissors to cut the strips into 1 1/4" squares while watching TV. At least I found something I can do while its raining.

If your wife sews, and she cuts a lot of material, you might ask her if she has a rotary cutter for the fabric. It'll make the process go a lot quicker. My wife does quilts and uses one to cut the fabric and it works pretty slick and makes the job a whole lot faster and easier.

My wife has been making a few flannel quilts for the grandkids lately. I took all of her scraps and cut them down to patch size for my 50 caliber. Used her rotary cutter and cutting pad which made the process quite quick.

Well I was out shopping today, stopped at the local wal mart and in the fabric department got the surprise of my life. I asked the lady working there if she had flannel. She showed me a spool of it and then asked me, are you one of them muzzleloader shooters? I just started laughing. I told her I was. She then asked me if I used the stuff for patching a ball and I told her no.. the 100% pillow tick was better for that. This flannel works as cleaning patches I was told, and I'd take three yards ($8.91). She told me she never thought of using it for patches. Then she explained her daughter and son in law are into muzzleloader hunting big time and they buy a lot of this. She even told me they have three muzzleloaders already. I just smiled and told her, "three of them, Oh my...do tell!" Then asked her to show me the rotary cutters ($11.97).

So now I have to build a cutting board and make my own patches. I might try them as a patch for a ball as it measured out at .019 for thickness. Are you supposed to wash this stuff first before you cut it up for patches. Is there any sizing in it?

Dave - I don't wash it first. I just cut it into 1 1/4" squares. I got 2 yds and probably got about 1300 or so patches. So I guess those 3 yds you got will last you about a month........?
