Default Photos of Boolets recovered from melting snow bank back stop

Here are some photos of bullets I picked up today from my 27 yard back stop that is a plowed up snow bank.

In viewing the Following Photos it has become very Clear that the Hornady polymer tipped 250 gr SST is nothing but a thin skinned Varmit bullet and to shot them at anything larger than a Coyote is In my opinion unethical!!!

All the ML bullets shown in these photos were shot from a Knight T-Bolt with a charge of 80 grV of BH209 or less.

As you can plainly see the SSTs are in no better shape than the 2 hornet bullets just left of them, in fact they look very much identical other than size. All of these bullets were fired into the same Snow!

This is a close up of what I call the Worthless 250 Gr SST, notice the two 22 cal 46 gr winchester hornet bullets, would you feel good shooting your deer with these?

This is a close up of the 240 gr XTP mags notice the knurled bullets to make them tighter in the barrel. they farred muck better than the SST, did you notice 3 tips and only 2 bullets found?

This is a photo of three 330gr hard cast that I cast, these were picked up on the back side of the snow bank not the front they had penitrater over 6' of hard snow, the Worthless SSTs hadn't gone any deeper than the little hornet bullet!!

This photo is a close up ove the 45 cal Maxi's that I experimented in in Sabots, these are cast of pure lead and notice how short some are from the obteration of being fired. these pure lead boolets did better than what I will continue to call the Worthless SST. The longer ones were fired with 50gr. of BH209

This is a photo of the nose of the XTP loookss good

This photo is of some wadcutters from my 357 Rook, some 240 gr Hornady Swaged .430 swc that were shot in GHSabots, and my very own 260 grain cast clone of the 250 XTP also a cople of my grain bin boolets that I cast while cutting the mold for the 260s. notice these cast bullets were cast of WW NOT water dropped and they look beter than the Coyote bullet with the red/yelow tips.

The last photo is of the base of the two Grain bin boolits, I now believe these were cast of pure lead. Look at the engraved letters from the Sabot, now do you get to see that every Day? They even look better than the red/yellow tipped coyote bullets

I know some of the above may be considered controversial but I don't care the photos speak for themselfs. I wouldn't shoot a SST/ SW at any thing larger than a Coyote Period.\!!!!!!

Please remember that All of these Bullets were shot from the same 27 yard bench with the same charge 80Gr. of BH209 or less.

Let the controversy Begin!

This has been shown over on the Savage forum, by shooting into Perma Gel by the Left Hand:

also I reference this here:

in a comparison of the Parker BE and the 250g SW.

The definitve article for me was this:

http://dougva.proboards34.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Savage&thre ad=2422&page=1

and in particular this picture:

shot into this:

Conclusion the author of the wet newspaper test has was exactly the same conclusionas yours:

The long and the short of it: 250 SST acts like a varmint round, left a huge channel but disintegrated, looked like someone put "Sparkle" paint down the hole from all the micro- fragments. 300 SST even larger channel and was a perfect mushroom. Barnes Original also cut a nice channel and retained 95% of it's wt.!
Chap

PS:
I shoot Barnes Origonals in my Savage 300g with CR sabot, the 300g SW is MUCH more accurate, but accuracy is only King, penetration is queen, expansion is prince and shoot thru is princess. Gotta have all 4 for "the perfect storm".

Your results are what I would expect given this:

If your lookin for penetration without expansion, then cast if for you. Now, if your thinkin' that way (you have the LBT's and your own casts in here, so I am think you are). Why does Craig Boddington shoot an expanding bullet first and a solid 2nd in his double for cape buffalo? Think about that if "penetration is king" regardless of all other factors. Craig also says "long shanked bullets with perfect mushrooms" is a thing of beauty. That should tell you two things, 100% weight retention is important and great expansion is important. That is my conclusion at least.
Great tests. Chap

I have taken over 150 game animals, I would not know about killing snow banks but I can sure tell you that I have taken a lot of game with XTP and SW and Gold Dot bullets and they work just fine I also tried cast bullets and once tracked a deer for around a mile before he went down he had a neat round hole through the middle of one lung and the front edge of the other and that was the last cast bullet I ever shot at deer.
You have to put things in perspective deer are light weight thin skinned animals they rarely weigh in over 200 pounds a fast opening 250 Gold Dot well placed will drop one on the spot every time, they rarely go more than 30 yards with a SW and I use the same bullets on boar with good results. If I were going after Moose or big bear I would use a nosler partition bullet which gives both penetration and expansion. I personally don't want to spend all the bullets energy in the hillside behind the deer after punching a neat round hole in him, what I want is a bang flop. Lee

I've been there Lee. Fell for the hype on LBT WFN (wide flat nose) hard cast bullets and tried them in my .41 Mag Blackhawk. They were accurate as the dickens. Double lunged a doe and she ran forever. Never again. I suppose they would do for bone breaking high shoulder shots, but I don't like that kind of shot.

Thanks for the report. The 250grn SST is a varmint bullet in my opinion as well. Are those the flex tip or hard tip?
